Good old Thor, dear TC-11, you provide the best riser fxs and sweeps for live looping! - Live Jam

Hey guys!
Hope you and your beloved are well in this strange times.

Made a new jam and thought i could share it here.
It reminds of 90s Electronica and the French Touch movement.

Here i used the good old Thor on the iPad to produce a riser fx (60s sci-fi preset), with it’s volume controlled by an expression pedal.
Then i used TC-11 on the iPhone for a touch controlled noise sweep.
They are perfect for transitioning while live looping.

Here is the performance, hope you enjoy!

  • Cool setup.

Do you have any tricks and tips you need to utilise in regards to latency?

    MIDi routing in particular.

Thanks man! To get low latency in Ableton i use lowest buffer size possible. 128 in my case (i can’t go lower). This is the most important thing, and i can achieve it by using less plugins and most of all Ableton stock devices (which are better optimized). Then you should compensate for driver error if needed.

Good stuff. Hope you're ok with questions, as I really dig the setup you have. The Push 2 looks central to it all. Anything you wish it would do better? What is the best feature of it for your setup?

I got the recent LP Pro which is great and has got me using Ableton again. I wouldn't rule out a Push in future though. :)

Happy to answer your questions ;)
About Push 2, to be honest don’t use it to its full potential nowadays. Maybe because i play only hardware gear, and usually use that gears external sequencers or their keyboards to play parts. I use Ableton Live as a master clock, to apply effects and to record audio and midi, sometimes to sequence midi. So i use Push only to trigger clips for recording/looping (things you can do with a LP), and to tweak some effects. But i must admit Push was a real game changer back when i used soft synths only, because i used it to sequence them and to tweak their parameters. Surely i will try to use it more and more, trying to better integrating it in my hardware setup. One of the best features in my opinion is parameter lock, where you can automate parameters on step basis. What would i like to add to Push? Two jack inputs for expression pedals :)
If you own an ipad, or iphone, i think you can integrate the LP with Touchable app, which is great too.
I’m planning some tutorials about my setup, would be nice if you could help pointing me out particular topics you dig. Thanks mate!

  • Great answers. Digging through your YouTube vids and tutorials. Cool content! I love seeing how others use MIDI in their setup, so I guess if you touch on that, that would be cool. I caught the Pedals vid too, nice!

  • At least we now know who’s hoarding all those soup cans 🤔

Thanks man, glad to help. Look forward to hear your jams! And i’ll make that tutorial about midi routing, sooner or later 😉

It can easily be considered one of the first ios vintage synths 😄

I’m still flabbergasted that Reason Studios decided not to continue development of Thor and instead put out that half-baked Reason Compact.

Agreed. It's one of the ones I would buy all over again and for extra money if they'd update/au-it etc.

+1 hope they are planning to release something else.. like a full fledged ios Europa synth. I give a lot of credit to Thor and to the developer, because i learned a lot about synthesis with it. Would love a new top tier synth from them.

If recall correctly the issue with Thor is the same as with Waldorf Nave: development was contracted out and those developers are no longer available. The existing code is old and everything would have to be reworked from scratch.

Magic 8-ball sez Don’t count on it 🥺

Ooh Nave, another old love of mine.. sooo sad! I think i fell in love with apps like i do now with hardware synths. Stroke Machine was another example. That didn’t happen to me with vst synths.. Think developers should consider this
