Would people currently recommend Reslice or not? ?

I had a look through some of the threads. I know nothing about sampling really, it's a new area for me to explore. If you have bought this app do you still use it and enjoy it? My impression upon reading through threads was that a lot of people found it confusing, buggy, needing a manual etc. Curious what the lay of the land is currently, thnx!

It is a great app if you like doing the things that it does. I am surprised that the impression you got is that it is buggy. It seems quite reliable to me.

Whether you will like it or not will probably depend on whether you like to do the things that it does. If you haven't done so, check the many video demos that can be found on YouTube.

  • I have to say that Reslice is fantastic, really creative. I would just add a wider library of pre-installed loops but you can have whatever you want. It is immediate and deeply customizable.

  • Thanks guys, I have taken a look at some videos and am intrigued, yes, but it is hard to say until I have tried it and experimented with it myself. I'm very much on a process of discovery with these things, thanks for your feedback.

  • I’m not that keen, but only because its feature set never really grabbed me. I have never had any issues when I have used it though - not come across any bugs with it, but that’s not saying there are not any. Sorry if this seems a little non committal, as you seem keen to buy it really ;)

  • Personally, I use it more for utility than instrument or creative resource. It very handily will chop up loops into small segments that can be batch exported for consumption elsewhere. That's my primary use case

    I’m in the same club!

  • Thanks guys, and what are you then doing with those slices, for example?

Depends, I either drop them into Auxy, or into Nanostudio. Depends on what I'm doing and whether or not where I'm working has a decent slicer built in. I'm kind of wary of loading up ReSlice as an instrument in a host and plopping a sample in there... I'm concerned it's not saving the loop with the instance of the AUv3. I haven't tested it, but the uncertainty makes me avoid using it like this.

  • I bought it a couple of hours ago and am very pleased I did, but it’s not been without frustrations.

My use case is to record a vocal sample and then chop it and play it live so it no longer sounds anything like me. Although it is AU3, to record live it has to be IAA (I’ve got it in AUM in the effect slot). So far so good, it provides immediately satisfying results.

The frustration I have is not being able to stop it receiving midi from my keyboard so I can play something else. I can select an individual channel in the app, but not select or deselect a source. Also, when switching Apps there’s quite a lot of glitching going on.

This feels like the perennial nearly but not quite ios dilemma, but I’m trying to get through that in the hope that one day it gets updated to a sampling/slicing AU. EG Pulse has given me hope that such things are possible, in that it can record and slice to pads, but Reslice is definitely more fun to play.with the arp patterns.

With its arp and ability to pitch shift and pan slices, it can be used to create percussive rhythmic patterns or it’s also nice for ambient or atmospheric sound scapes. You can easily import and play around with different ways of slicing up a sample combined with different arp presets you can tweak. You could also use it in more straight forward traditional drum kit approach where each sample is assigned to a different note.

If you have AUM and some bpm linked sound chain going, you can record some perfect loops in AUM and import them into ReSlice where you’d set the number of slices to the number of beats in the loop you’ve recorded.

  • Thanks a lot, very useful info. Why is this not capable of direct audio recording of channel audio when in the fx slot of AUM then, I wonder? That seems really weird.

    Currently only as IAA :(

  • Great app, major missing function.

    Velocity.

  • As far as I’m aware there are very few AU3 Apps that can currently sample/record audio via the host fx slot, EG Pulse can, as well as L7 and Enso loopers. I think it’ll become more widespread as time goes on.

  • I’m not a fan either. My enthusiasm petered out before I arrived at any satisfactory results. I have tried with it several times. It’s not for me.

Can we inform the developer for this major/minor thing? I would like to improve ReSlice and contribute to Virsyn somehow. I mean, as a community of user.

  • I think i’ve found a satisfactory workaround for quick recording to Reslice AU3 and avoiding using the IAA in AUM. It’s really quick to record a loop/sample in L7 looper, copy to clipboard and then paste in ReSlice. It’s only a couple of extra button presses and doesn’t feel like too much App jumping.

The only negative so far is you can only have one AU3 instance of L7 at the moment, so if i’m using it as a sampler to feed Reslice then I probably won’t be looping with it.

  • Ah! Yeah, about L7, why can you only have one instance. Doesn't this kind of defeat the point of it being an audio unit?

  • About velocity, is there not a tab in Reslice called 'Level' that does this? Or what aspect of velocity is problematic in it exactly? @topaz

No. One of the conveniences is everything state saved in your session. The way the AU memory limits work, it can be tricky to get some memory-hungry AUs to be multi-instance.

  • OK, yeah, L7 has its own advantages/disadvantages compared to something like enso

  • About the velocity problem mentioned, was the meaning mentioned maybe referring to a lack of control over velocity when triggering samples from a midi keyboard?
