Yamaha FM Essentials

It sounds great.

Wasn’t this unlockable with hardware only?

I just installed it and it works.

Are all of the sounds unlocked?

As it comes with a selection of sounds
that you can use regardless of the unlock.

I recently went into the Yamaha store in
Central London to unlock the one on my iPad.

It was the only way to fully unlock it.

AuV3 works and tweakable, but only 10 presets.

@jolico yeah that is the standard. The unlock allows you to save your own modified presets, and give you multiple large banks of presets.

I did it on my phone by going into a music store, but it does not unlock for other devices. If you ever remove the app, you will need to unlock again.

However, they do encourage you to go into Yamaha dealers and unlock it for free.

The IAA app, Yamaha Synth Book has around a hundred presets from different sounds, not necessarily FM, and is free and unlocked.

  • That is if you can still find a store with the MX V2 keyboards on display...
...wish Yamaha would release an IAP for unlock it as it's the best TX81z emulation there is!

I did e-mail them way back when FMEssentials.app was released and it was only made as a 'promo app' for the MX keyboards.
Same as with the awesome AN Synth in the SynthBook app...

Also the FMEssentials.app is one instance only, so even if you can load multiple instances they all share the same preset.

Also the 'unlock' is not saved with the iOS backup so if there is a need to restore the iPad the unlock is lost.

I'm happy as long as it keeps on working...

  • You can save presets in AUM.

True but those preset can not be used if FMEssentials is used with multiple hosts.
With the unlock there's plenty of classic FM presets (DX100/TX81z etc) and the emulation is spot on.
(Apart from 'device noise' I can't hear any difference between my TX81z and the App).

    It does sound great.
I have a very similar machine:
    The Yamaha TQ-5 (4-op).
