Shockwave and RE-1 Alternatives
Alright so I’m looking for some alternatives. I’ve been having some issues with both Shockwave and RE-1 and I’m looking for some apps with comparable features.
I love the sound and UI of Shockwave but it seems to be fairly resource intensive and I keep having issues with the preset menu not loading.
I love the idea of RE-1. I know I can use ReelBus for the tape emulation, but I love the idea of the tape delay and looping as well. But I’m having issues with random artifacts in the loop and the UI not scaling correctly, making it impossible to manipulate some knobs.

Have you considered Enso as a looper replacement?
What did you like about Shockwave? Modulation options? The sequencer and randomization? Cross modulation? Phase distortion sound? Depending on that there could be different alternatives, though nothing comes close in a single package IMO.
Check out K7D by Imaginando ... versatile tape delay with a whole bunch of tweakable parameters. The only thing I wish it had that RE-1 has is the manual tape stop thing. It can be subtle or wild as you wish.
Also TB ReelBus sounds fantastic and I use it a lot, esp for more lofi sounding tracks. Probably more of an accurate emulation, with a bunch of tape models and saturation models for examine, this is the more realistic if you’re after authentic tape artefacts and warming/saturation.
I always forget about Enso. I was a little overwhelmed when I first got it but I should definitely give it a shot. Thank you for the reminder.
The whole phase distortion thing is really what speaks to me. I haven’t done much with the modulation but I understand the depth that’s there. But there’s so much in one app, and I think that’s probably what makes it so resource intensive.
K7D looks pretty good. I think what I liked about RE-1 is that it can get really wild and out of control easily whereas it seems that ReelBus is made to be more accurate. Which is perfect for most applications. I love it. But sometimes I want to get weird.
I must second the suggestion for enso, such an incredible tool, its one of those apps where it is worth reading the manual in detail, and audio damage really have their manual writing game down! One of the many things I love about that dev. This is one of the annoying things about Shockwave.... No damn manual, and the in app help buttons don't really give all the needed info, at least for ppl relatively new to these things.
Personally, I would try to find a way to make Shockwave work as it sounds so good. NPD is excellent as well.
It really does. It just weighs things down so much. And it’s super annoying to have to reload the AU multiple times to get presets to show. I’m trying to stick with it, and will if there’s not a solid alternative.
Yeah I’ll definitely need to give it another shot.
@YourJunk Are you using Shockwave in AUM? Does adjusting buffer size to 1024 help at all?
No, mainly in CB3. Which I know is a problem in and of itself. But I’ve narrowed it down as one of my most problematic apps in there. Stuff like Lagrange and Volt seem to work fine.
K7D is the best sounding tape delay emulation i have heard in a long time.
Building a polyphonic version of Shockwave in Drambo is certainly worth a try, it has everything included to re-build at least its synth engine.
Eh I’ll be honest, Drambo is not for me.
Re1 has worked well for me. Wonder if it’s because I only use it as a looper.
When I try to go into the looper preset, it crashes in AUM. Every time.
Weird - never had a problem with it.
I haven’t had any trouble, but I just tried this and mine too crashed. Repeatedly.
I then deleted RE-1, restarted and reinstalled RE-1. Works fine now.
I haven't had any issues with RE-1 crashing in a long while (early on it did have some issues for me). Just tried the Looper preset and it's working fine here.
I would definitely look into re-installing and seeing if it's a local issue for you. If that doesn't work, check in with the developer; I found a bug regarding the AUM "Main Parameter Knob" and Kai was very responsive in getting that fixed.
Yeah, I use the tape looper A LOT, so I was surprised to hear about problems.
I’ll have to give it another try. I did email Kai about my issues with both apps but never heard back.
