Cubasis 3: Where is the Tempo Track (e.g. change bpm during song?)
Hello,
I am using Cubasis 3 for my first project after apple Pencil Support was brought back after the last update (hoooray!)
In my first procect I want to increase the tempo of my song after an slow intro.
How can I change the bpm or even the time signature of my song for various parts in cubasis 3?
In 2016 (4 years ago!) this feature was requested in https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=108987
The answer of the steinberg support was:
Thanks for your message. Tempo track support is on our feature list for future updates.
Now the question: Am I ignorant in finding the feature tempo track or is this important feature still missing in 2020?
I know how to change tempo in Korg gadget or NS3 (it is a bit hidden in these apps, too)
But I can not figure it out in cubasis 3.
I am grateful for all of your advice
Thanks!

I’m hoping that during the complete rebuild process someone included the functionality in the coding to implement tempo changes (and lots of other tools in the requests list). It will be a long wait until Cubasis 4 to get another opportunity to do another rebuild!
I will need to buy it at some point due to working with Cubase on PC! 🤷♂️
I would not be surprised at all if GarageBand gets tempo automation before Cubasis gets it...
Sure I do get that tempo automation can be a bit tricky when audio-tracks are involved especially if real-time stretching is needed.
Then again the Elastic libraries used by Cubasis allow realtime stretching so I don't see why it's not already implemented?!
(If we ask we'll likely just get the classic 'everything comes at a cost' and then we just keep on waiting and waiting).
But for now it's a no can do in Cubasis...
You can’t change tempo nor time signature mid-track in C3..
You can always record all the midi stuff into Nanostudio 2 with the relevant tempo changes and then export the audio stems into Cubasis to record the live instrument/vocal audio.
There is no such capability in Cubasis. Nor can you change time signatures. I like Cubasis, but this is a deal-breaker for me, and so I don’t use it anymore.
I also think that the missing of midi hardware controls is a tragedy. I was mixing a 30 tracks song. I was checking with equalizer the volume of which track to check DB value. For each track I need to open mixer, set volume, then open the equalizer set on the whole track and check the value. If I need to change volume I need to call back the mixer volume, change it, and then open again the equalizer auv3 window. A kind of terrible loop. If I could change volume with a hardware control everything would be really faster.
I think tempo track and hardware control are the biggest problems of Cubasis.
Is there no way to do pitch automation either? Trying to find it and I’m not seeing it.
There's only the option to change the pitch of the entire audio-clip but not anything similar to flex pitch in Logic.
(Yeah, I'll be making loads of Logic Pro X references since I'm back to digging into it while waiting for the next update to drop).
Damn. Need me some of that. I’m pretty positive all major PC/Mac DAWs have it. Pretty critical to modern EDM.
+1
Thank to all you!
To wrap it up
I use most of the ios DAWs. They all have there pros and cons. I love and use them all.
However:
C3 : great Audio, No tempo change, AU3 (Pro-Q3 & Co.), no transport controls. Love it, but an update would be even better
NS3: Great tempo change, no Audio, AU3 (Pro-Q3 & Co.), no transport controls. Love it, but an update would be even better.
Gadget : Basic Audio, tempo change , No AU3, transport controls -> Great as it is. Perfect package. Love it as it is.
BM3: Great Audio, AU3 (Pro-Q3 & Co.), tempo change, Transport controls & More-> Great for beatmaking. Love it (but I am terrible beat maker. More a keyboard-synth type).
Garage: Fun & Free & different. Love it to play arround.
We have many great DAWs on IOS.
However I am looking forward for two updates:
C3: Addition of tempo tracks and transport controls. Then it would nearly perfect for me.
NS3: Addition of Audio and transport controls. Then it would nearly perfect for me.
We are already very close to a perfect world :-)
You're at least a decade too early on "NS3" given the developer's pace. ;-)
I’m not sure about NS3, but NS2 does have the ability to map mixer controls.
Also, if you load NS2 into Audiobus, you can map controllers to its or NS2’s start/stop button in Audiobus to at least be able to start and stop it. Unfortunately you can’t map anything to the record button, but it’s better than nothing.
LOL!
Most likely NS3 will have it all in the future ;-)
Of course right now we are at NS2
Thanks. This is helpfull.
In Gadget I can use the Korg Gadget Bluetooth control from my Nanono Control Studio MIDI Controller for transport control.
The same controler (e.g. Nanocontrol STudio) works in BM3, too.
BM3 is over the top good at mapping nearly anything to MIDI controllers.
In Korg Gadget you can map to MIDI to a lot of stuff.
Hopefully C3 and NS2 will catch up with BM3 and Korg Gadget regarding MIDI Mapping.
Two years have passed and nothing has changed? it's a shame, Steinberg!
I need a DAW when I can set one bar 4/4 and another 7/8 and so on, with midi and audio tracks, any thoughts?
I agree this should be a fundamental feature of any DAW. It’s a great shame that so few IOS DAWs have the ability to change time signature and tempo.
If I’m remembering correctly, on the Cubasis forums the word from the developers is that adding a tempo track or time signature changes would require significant changes to the code base, so we shouldn’t look for it any time soon. Every time I come back to Cubasis 3 I’m thrilled for a few weeks before remembering this limitation, and how it makes so many things impracticable.
While I haven't used it myself I understand that Audio Evolution added tempo changes in a track 'recently'. I've been having enough fun with AUM tempo recently with Mozaic controlling it. One day I'll tidy up my script and publish it. There, I've said it so maybe it'll happen!
Just found this trick!! https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/50953/cubasis-3-beatmaker-3-tempo-automation-using-link-and-aum-tempo-presets#latest
Another 'nice to have' feature I miss in Cubasis 3 is that when I chop up a segment of audio it would be so handy to just tell Cubasis this chunk/selection is 8 beats, calculate the BPM for me.
It would also be super handy to set the project BPM based on an audio recording made without a metronome.
Just select a know duration (1-2 bars) and tell Cubasis to set the tempo based on the selection.
Others would be x-crossing snaps when trimming start & end of audio / samples and when moving loop-markers to set loops etc. etc.
There's just a gazillion of small quality of life improvements that would be so nice...
Will we get these things in Cubasis before/if/when Logic drops for iPad?
Cheers!
@Janosax, if you have Mozaic then I have a script that uses pitchbend for fine control of tempo so you can create a tempo track in Cubasis without having to setup individual 'tempo presets' in AUM:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/50993/solved-cubasis-tempo-track-with-aum-and-mozaic#latest
This was all inspired by the same Ableton link mechanism as the thread you found.
If you ever get Loopy Pro, you can add an instance anywhere you like in the project or standalone. With Link enabled in both apps you can import the loop into loopy and it will calculate the tempo and set it in both apps.
Having to use extra apps to ‘cover up’ for for basic features missing in a DAW is a no-go.
I’ll just keep on using BM3 on the iPad and Logic on my Mac…
@alesis :Try Multi track studio for pad
I’ve gone deep on BM3, NanoStudio, Gadget and now Cubasis. Lately the ability to record gui movements, easily record the output of midi effects, and time stretch audio have been important and Cubasis does all those things well. But using Cubasis means giving up things like the speed of NS2 and separate time signatures per scene like in Gadget and Zenbeats.
Each daw having useful features but also missing basic features seems to be our lot in life on iOS.
Tell me about it. Today's epic project is to upgrade Office on my wife's Macbook Air, then upgrade to Big Sur, then install Logic Pro trial version as the old Logic 10.4 I had obtained dubiously can't handle new GarageBand projects!
Hopefully I'll then be able to port my iOS Garageband tracks to the Mac, load into Logic, export Midi, then get the Midi back to iOS where I can load it into Cubasis and manipulate the tempo through my Mozaic 'midi effect'. I tried the workaround with aif to midi, but that wasn't great... so all of this just to get Midi export and import so I can control tempo on a track I created on iOS Garageband. Ridiculous!
I just used a workaround that might be useful for some of your purposes. I just needed a final ritardando for a MIDI sequence. I split the last measures into individual bars. Then starting with the last bar, I moved each segment to a later point. Then I used stretching to fill the gaps created. Only one small problem: Notes were cut off between segments. I just glued the pieces back together, and, voila! everything was just right.
I'll upload my project later and post a link.
