Patterning AU? Any plans?
Anyone know of any plans for Patterning to become an AU?
Comments
@benkamen ?
Huh ...that is a nice wish to have. I think the problem was to make the interface looks fine and be functional on auv3.
He has said in the past that Patterning is unlikely to become an AUv3 but has mentioned the possibility that it might become a host. He considers (and I don't disagree) that it is more like a host (given its sophisticated tempo mapping) than a client.
On his web site, you can find his discussion as to why.
But, who knows, maybe some form of it might show up as an AUv3.
I’ve never really had a problem with just one instance of it.
i bought my ipad because of patterning 1, before auv3 was becoming the must have... then i got patterning 2 and fell in love again. this gives me two instances of patterning at one time... plus the iphone version 😎 makes 3.
i would still love to see this as an auv3 tho, but because i need more instances but i love those floating windows in aum to make changes on the fly without having to go in and out... with auv3 you can adjust your instrument, aufx and the channel strip very conveniently on the fly which for me is a big part of my workflow.
however, i still use patterning all the time because it is amazing, and with song mode you can mostly just let it play without having to tweak to much on the fly
Poly2 is best Patterning AU alternative
My understanding is that if an app doesn’t have AU from the start it has to basically be rewritten to add it. Which I imagine would take a very long time for an app like that...
hmmm maybe i need to buy the unlock
That’s an over-simplification and a quite a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, it could be a great deal of work (for some apps more than others), but no, it’s not like starting over from scratch, unless the code was just horribly badly organized.
As for Patterning as an AU, the original position from the developer was that he wasn’t interested for several reasons. But on the other hand, he also wasn’t interested for several reasons in doing an iPhone version ... and that happened.
So, I wouldn’t call it an impossibility, but I wouldn’t speculate that it’ll ever happen either.
Not my words. I have read them on here from another developer I don’t recall the name of.
Sure, I didn't mean to imply it was an exaggeration on your part, but rather on the part of the developer who said it, if it was a generalization about all apps, rather than their own. Sorry if it sounded that way.
Putting my preference for AU to one side. Could someone explain to me why being a host would be preferable to being a multi-out AU and then just chaining FX and outputting midi in a DAW or AUM?
For the most part, I can’t think of any. But there is one nifty feature I can think of that would be lost ... tempo changes between patterns, and how they can be used to drive Link tempo. An AU guest wouldn’t be able to set the tempo for the host, I don’t think.
While it would be an exaggeration to say that it is true of all apps, it is true for an awful lot of apps. A number of respected developers have essentially said the same thing -- that turning their year-ago-written standalone apps into AUv3s would essentially require rewriting from scratch to do it right. The Audulus folks tried to avoid doing that and thought they were 95% of the way complete when they realized that they really did need to rewrite their framework in order for the AU to be stable and extensible.
There are some apps that clearly have not been super hard to port but a great many will require major rewriting.
That makes sense. So you would need a DAW with that tempo change feature to do the same thing with AU then. A rare bird on iOS, I agree.
UI adjustments could be a reason: when your app is only host there's only a fixed set of sizes you need to support, which also can't change at runtime. This particular developer already chose not to implement the full version in iPhone, so I could see why they would prefer avoiding a similar problem by allowing the app to be hosted in a, say, small AUM window.
OK thanks. I meant preferable for the user but I get the point
Sorry, now I see I totally misunderstood your question
I just wanna say I love how the user kits are incorporated in Patterning. I was browsing for something with a sound like finger cymbals, and i found a Japanese kit, plus several other really interesting kits. And they'r really easy to access.
There's so much good stuff lurking there!
Now that the iPhone UI exists, I would be more than happy if Patterning 2 could be used in slide-over / split-screen mode.
While I would certainly make use of an AU version, a bit more control that what can be done from the Audiobus control panel is all I really need (well, Audiobus State Saving would be nice too!).
Question
I owned patterning 1 from the beginning
Installed on iPhone today
To unlock it wants £4.59
Will I get charged as I brought the original on my iPad years ago ????
@0tolerance4silence
Thanks
I thought as much
Normally I just jump straight in, but felt uneasy this time
Think I will pass, as there is version 2,
And fingers crossed not too far away an av3 version ( then I will spend )
Be safe
I’m not a coder and not sure how much time and pain will consume auv3 developing, but still hope for some kind of simplified patterning le. Brilliant app
Whoa whoa whoa… Patterning 3 showing signs of life??
Love Patterning. Together with Samplr and Animoog 1 still a dreamteam on iOS,
Floating windows have pro and cons. And patterning needs a full screen to operate. I love working with true full screen iaa apps in AUM and switch between them with a single midi button press. Auv3 windows need a double press for show/ hide. So using this method when using both auv3 and iaa is confusing for muscle memory. 😆
Just in case you're not aware: you can MIDI map the "Show plugin" action in AUM so a single MIDI button press brings the window to the top
