Here's to you
Reading Melville could be a tough slog during college, but in the midst of all the whaling information there were occasionally gold-nugget passages. This one is from a chapter titled The Hyena.
"There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody’s expense but his own. However, nothing dispirits, and nothing seems worth while disputing. He bolts down all events, all creeds, and beliefs, and persuasions, all hard things visible and invisible, never mind how knobby; as an ostrich of potent digestion gobbles down bullets and gun flints. And as for small difficulties and worryings, prospects of sudden disaster, peril of life and limb; all these, and death itself, seem to him only sly, good-natured hits, and jolly punches in the side bestowed by the unseen and unaccountable old joker. That odd sort of wayward mood I am speaking of, comes over a man only in some time of extreme tribulation; it comes in the very midst of his earnestness, so that what just before might have seemed to him a thing most momentous, now seems but a part of the general joke."
It’s not exactly news that I am certainly going to die. I’ve never seen any good reason to worry about it, so I’ve tended to go in the other direction and occasionally increase the odds of my own demise.
That doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and lick doorknobs or kiss coughing strangers, but I refuse to be scared of a disease that’s extremely unlikely to kill me even if I get it.
In fact I’m totally in favor of strategically fighting the virus. I just want to keep the attitude positive during the fight. There are way too many people currently spreading way too much gloom and doom.
In general people have a great long-term track record when it comes to fighting disease. I think that the one positive outcome of Covid-19 is that all future corona viruses will become easy to defeat.
That will take lots of work, but I have a lot of faith in the workers. It’s obviously tragic that so many people will die before a cure is consistently effective. In a way those victims die as involuntary soldiers.
This sorry scourge will be defeated, and the economy will go from depression to a post-war boom. That doesn't necessarily mitigate the damage that happens during the meantime.
I'm just a drummer in a rock and roll band. I'm not entitled to my own existence. I didn’t create myself, and I don’t have the ability to order my own cells around. There are trillions of them and they do what they do on their own.
My collection of cells doesn’t specifically deserve to live another day. I could have been a bumblebee, or a termite, or a hyena. I’m glad that I’ve been a human. I got a free ticket to see the show.
I hope you all have many good years ahead of you.
