The EQ550 faithfully captures the punch, low-frequency transparency, and ultra-tight imaging of iconic American EQs of the late 1960’s.

Making use of Proportional Q intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at minimal settings and narrows it at higher settings without the need for additional bandwidth controls. This unique feature minimizes the «phase-shift» sound found in many equalizers.

The EQ550 provides reciprocal equalization at 21 points in 5 steps of boost to a maximum of 12dB of gain at each point. The twenty one equalization points are divided into three overlapping ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter may be inserted independently of all other selected equalization settings. Frequency ranges and boost/cut are selected by switches, and a pushbutton «IN» switch allows the EQ to be silently introduced to the signal path. A small toggle switch is used to insert the band-pass filter into the EQ550.

The EQ550 extends the features of the original hardware and joins the flexibility of the digital world to the character of the analog processing. Allows you to choose between equalizer modes (Stereo, Mid, Side) and remove analogue saturation from the processing circuit to deliver pure digital sound.

To use EQ550 as a plug-in, you need an AUv3-compatible host app like GarageBand, Auria, AUM, Cubasis and more — EQ550 will appear in the list of Audio Unit extensions for effect plug-ins in the host app.

Based on Classic American EQ from the late '60s, the EQ550b is a continuation of the EQ that played a major role in the history of music recording, but with an additional filter band and several new frequencies.     Yes, that’s right. The first two sound really good. I’ll probably pony up for the 550 B. Wish they would do the Harrison EQ...

  • I have fabfilter, toneboosters, and other EQs (though I tend to use only the two mentioned). Would there be any point in grabbing this new EQ?

    DDMF only one you’ll need! That’s all I’ve got for eq. Pricey but!

    I think so. These add a distinct color to to the sound, but lack the flexibility. Personally, I’d get GoToEQ by Klevgrand before I got these, but I use the Trident one (EQ A) a fair amount.

    I do wish there was a law that every software EQ had to include a visualizer; it’s so incredibly helpful, even if one does listen with ears and not eyes.

    Question for you @audio_DT: do you have a logic behind when you use Toneboosters vs FabFilter? I have them both, but so far it seems like they bring many of the same strengths (i.e. transparency and near-infinite flexibility) to the table.

  • @mulletsaison I have both Fabfilter and ToneBoosters too. My use case CPU allocation. Heavier projects with a lot of synths and FX benefit from lower CPU of ToneBoosters but lighter ones I use Fabfilter first.

    Might demo these but don't think I need them either.

    Cool. That makes a lot of sense. These are really nice EQs, definitely worth a demo because the use case is different for sure. These add warmth and girth, and are pretty cheap. And if you don’t have GoTo, I’d go get that. :smiley:

  • Bought this today, the RRS 550b with the extra bandwidth control based on the API Audio 550b. I wasn’t planning to as I already have a lot of RRS stuff, but I d/l the demo and put it on my mix/synth/drums. Wow, just love how this eq sounds, brings out details and tame things when needed quickly. RRS just never disappoints, high quality for low prices.     Awesome that you have a demo for all their stuff. Why is it so hard to implement for anyone else? Developers, look at this!!
