Geoshred

Nothing like a free app to make you change your long-held belief that "shredding" was atrocious in all forms.

Let me say that Jordan Rudess's videos set my teeth on edge. I can't stand the idea of using an iPad to sound like the Guitar Center on a Saturday on Hollywood Boulevard, with thirty different dudes trying out their Yngwie Malmsteen licks.

But I downloaded Geoshred Play, and yes, it's a beautiful implementation. I was wrong.
And as a guitarist, I find it pretty easy to get a nice sounding performance out of the app.

But what do you get with pro? AU would be nice but not necessary; can't imagine I'd use more than one instance of this app at a time. But it would be intriguing to play, say, Phasemaker or Zeeon with this. Is the midi implementation natural/simple?

I guess my big question: It doesn't always need to sound like "shredding," does it?

  • What is it with Jordan Rudess and every computer-driven musical program on earth? He can’t be short of a bob or two and yet it seems he has a spare octave or two for each and every one’s opening night.

No one’s compelling you to shred with it. It does Jeff Beck ballads just as well, plus all the more experimental stuff. The pro app lets you program it. It’s a very deep instrument with tons of programming options. It has one of the best MPE implementations I know of.

  • I never use the built in sounds, I like it as a controller for other things.

If that's all you use it for, I'd suggest looking into velocity keyboard

  • +1, geoshred has no velocity (at least on iPad). That is a serious failing and makes it useless for me. Don't like the sounds either. It is my most regretted mpe purchase.

For free, it brought a smile to my face with the shredding and all. Smiles are a great thing nowadays.

  • Sure, get it for free definitely, and I don't mean to take away from that kind gesture

I have it, but I like geoshred as a controller. I got pro before the midi only geoshred came out, otherwise I would have just done the midi only version. I have a midi puc+, so I can use the iPad to control hardware synths with Bluetooth midi.

MPE purchases are such a shot in the dark. Just because an app says it's MPE compatible, doesn't mean it's friends with your MPE controller. Mostly because the people programming these apps usually don't have MPE controllers -- so they don't realize the things you look at first as a user of MPE. Including but not limited to: The ability to easily change the pitch bend range. Omni midi channel controls. MIDI learn. Presets with aftertouch and modwheel built in (how the fuck are you gonna release a MPE synth and no have MPE presets? looking at literally almost everyone right now). A MOD WHEEL THAT IS ACTUALLY MPE AND NOT ONE CHANNEL . GLOBAL pitch bend settings, for the love of fucking god. Each one of these things are enough to make an MPE synth completely useless if it's missing. Look at the new Tal-U-No-LX synth. Every time I open a new preset, I have to press a button to enable mpe again. WHY. FUCKING WHYYYYYYYYY

I'd say I'm lucky if I regret 3/4ths of all MPE synth purchases.

And yeah, the geoshred presets are uglier than the sounds my cat makes after I put glass in their food and slap over 2 dozen out of sync abandonware delay effects on it. Looking forward to the SWAM colab.

  • Big massive +1 on all of the above

  • Yeah, i have an old Peavey bass guitar midi controller and it requires + and - 24 pitch wheel settings. Finding synths with MPE and multiple pitch wheel settings isn't easy. The Moog stuff works pretty well. Is there a way to accomplish this in Drambo?

Yes, but you essentially have to invent your own mpe synth within drambo, and invent the GUI. Continua and Magellan 2 is pretty good. Especially continua. Unfortunately, magelin 2 doesn't have mpe modwheel. Just pitch bend and after touch

Why is this shit so hard to get right. I just dont get it. It's simple stuff

I guess it’s too new? Not too many people believed in it from the start and now sometimes it seems as if it was implemented to quiten the voices of the “fanatics”.

The only synths I play in MPE “painless” are Roli’s Equator and Cypher (on Mac)

On iOS I must say that ThumbJam does the job but I’m not too much into samples.

  • Funny, my Midibase was made in 1992 and is the fast tracking system for bass/guitar to date. Every fret is a midi node.
Anyway, I need to try continua. Thanks for that!

Yeah, pitch to midi is tough on bass because of the frequency of the low notes. The wired frets are definitely going to work better. That’s awesome that you have that original midibase.

I just got the full version of equator when roli had the upgrade sale 2 weeks ago, it works really well with the block. I haven’t had as much success with mpe on ios synths beyond vibrato/ pitch bends. The capability is probably there on things like continua, but I just haven’t dug into them enough to try to assign modulation.

I've tried Velocity Keyboard with default settings (controlling GeoShred / SWAM as a test) and cannot get any of the expressions I can get on the GeoShred surface itself. Also the knobs confuse me -- I can swipe on them and the knob turns and the number changes while swiping, but the number then resets and the sound is unchanged.

    Any pointers appreciated !!

  • Ironically, what is missing in Velocity Keyboard is a XY Pad.
The one in GeoShred is crazy as regards the amount of possible assignments.

I like the presence of the XY pads in GeoShred, but for me the reality is I almost never use them. If it’s not directly on their keyboard layout, I tend to ignore it. Being able to control vibrato and volume on the keys makes for a far superior performance.

I’ve gotten it to control SWAM very nicely. In swam choose the seaboard preset. Set some of the expression controls to respond to after touch. In Velocity, send y axis to aftertouch.

I haven’t tried the knobs yet.
