What is the instrument in the beginning of this album?

edited April 2020 in Other

I'm a big Amon Tobin fan. This album is fantastic. Did you guy know the instrument he uses in the beginning of the album?

Can I recreate the sound with my iPad?

  • Sounds FMy and Icegeary (resonators) to me.

  • Woah it is beatless. Going to have to give this a go, thanks!

    Most likely samples.
Amon usually records his own samples, then using Haken Continuum + Kyma to create playable instruments.
On iPad not really, but the closest thing would be Roli Seaboard + Equator (desktop).

    Edit:
I mean roli does sell similar sample libraries for iPad as well, but that's not the same... not even close.

Now thinking about it maybe in Drambo with some kind of smart combination of sample, grain, buffer, resonators, mpe and stochastic triggering.
Hopefully some Drambo beta gods can help out :)

  • What is the best thing I can buy to record my own sample? iPad Pro good enough?

  • Amon Tobin is awesome.
On https://music.amontobin.com/album/long-stories he says that "Fear in a handful of dust" and Long Stories were made in parallel and says this:
"a good portion of the record was made with just one instrument, the ugly misshapen gray plastic omnichord that somehow only makes sounds that sound like magic. these get processed through a slew of creamy analogue machines. so it's like magic folded into chocolate. like something margot robbie might eat." :)

  • The sampling part is the least important thing here.
Yes, you can sample with iPads own microphone if that's what you mean or depending on your budget you can buy a microphone for better quality, but then you'll need an audio interface as well. Or a field recorder like Zoom H4n.

What makes this sound unique is the way those samples being manipulated and the expressive playability.
Unfortunately as far as I know nothing goes as deep as Continuum + Kyma and those are very expensive and rare to find.
With Roli Seabord + Equator combo you are kinda nearly there.

The real challenge is to actually make those patches.
