AUv3 supporting program changes?
I've been hunting for synths/fx that support patch changes via MIDI. I want to be able to quickly switch all my synths inside my AUv3 container (apematrix) for live performance.
Does anyone know of any AUv3s that do? There are a few previous threads about this, but none that are concise and specific to AUv3.
Here are my lists thus far. If anyone else knows some I can update the list.
AUv3 w/ MIDI Patch Changing
Phonem
Shockwave
Poison-202
Ruismaker
Ruismaker FM
Sunrizer (unconfirmed)
No MIDI Patch Changing
ruismaker noir
d1
phasemaker
phosphor
synthmaster one
minimoog (responds but glitches out)
primer
spacecraft
idensity
viking
FX: none tested support it

@quartzite
I'm sure you picked your tools according to your needs, but since there's a lot of overlap between Apematrix and AUM, it could be an alternative...
AUM will let you load projects, open AU plugin windows, change presets and tweak your tools via midi messages (note, cc, pc).
Yea, my reason for using apeMatrix is I wanted something simple to hold Drambo and a few fx/synths. I'm organizing the synths/fx UIs for easy fiddling on the 3 apeMatrix screens. Drambo send PC messages to change them when I load a new song. I only want one apeMatrix project across a whole "set" so that it can flow in a live situation (especially if I pipe in hardware for effecting in apeMatrix as well).
Synthmaster One supports Bank and Program Change
Ruismaker and RuisMaker FM support Program Change (MSB only), no bank select.
Going deeper, I wish Bank-change was more widely adopted along with PC.
Does this working AUv3? I've tried sending it bank / PC and nothing happens.
Thanks! I wish Noir / Phasemaker did as well...
Agreed.
Yes, I'm using it in AUM. I had some initial problems fixed by an iPad restart
Now it works flawlessly.
Sunrizer IAA used to so I expect Sunrizer AU will as well.
I was only able to switch banks/presets when I used the "preset load" mapping in AUM. Is that how you have it working as well? It didn't seem to respond "natively". I think this is what @0tolerance4silence was trying to remind me about but I had forgotten this feature.
This method worked for Noir as well which I really want to use. I wish apeMatrix had that midi functionality as well... or Aum supported saving AUv3 window locations to a few "pages" like apeMatrix.
Edit: Maybe I can get the level of immediacy I want (and patch changing) with AUM and "show plugin" midi mapping. Will mean using a midi controller (or an instance of drambo :P) to show the various plugins. I still like the simplicity and visualization of apeMatrix though.
I know Lagrange, Zeeon and Model D respond to PC but I dont think you can change the banks with midi.
Sorry for bumping an old thread but this just answered an issue I had previously…if you use MIDI in GarageBand it changes the patches on certain synths…and now I know why! I feel bad cause I thought it was a glitch with Trooper and got a refund in on it , thinking it was with the app.
So to answer the original post, based on first hand knowledge aka the ones I have.
Trooper, Zeeon, poison, and VAPoly support (or cause!) changes
OB XD, Copperhead, Ripplemaker , and Mood don’t
I just tried to send some PC messages through AUM and I’m noticing this as well. If I open up a synth as standalone and send it a PC message, it selects a new preset within the current bank. If I load that same synth up in AUM and route PC messages to it, nothing happens. This was the case for the first two synths I tried (DRC and Kauldron), so I assume it’s something to do with AUM rather than the synths. Is there a config option I’m missing? I’d love to get this working if possible.
If you are sending the midi to the AUv3, it seems less likely that it is not an AUM thing but rather that when run as an AUv3 they need a preceding bank select command or commands. You can confirm by trying in a different host. Some synths require msb and or lsb bank select cc’s before program changes work.
@espiegel123 good theory; I just tried prepending some bank select commands but that didn’t help. And you’re right, it’s not about AUM specifically. AUs in Drambo suffer the same issue.
This seems to be a discrepancy between the standalone and AU hosted versions of apps. It’s a frustrating limitation 😕 Has anyone found an app that understands Program Change messages in its hosted AU mode, or is the only way to get Program Change to work “out of the box” to use standalone apps?
It's definitely not caused by AUM, which passes PC messages just fine.
It's either a routing problem or the AUv3 version of the app doesn't support PC. There's no way to make an app support Program Change if it hasn't been implemented in the AUv3, other than talking the developer into adding it.
There are lots of synths that handle program change as AUv3. It’s been a while since I’ve needed to do it directly.
Can we make a list and add the details to the Wiki? (Notice how I said we knowing I won’t do the wiki work).
I like KQ Sampei for program changes…. I can just dial up instruments in a Mozaic script I use while the loop is running. I use a lot of the Mozaic scripts and corresponding KQ Sampei instances. Works great. KQ Sampei also loads SF2’s so I have a lot of sf2 to load up… Program Changes run from 1 to 127 so there is that limit. Bank Selects are needed when there’s more than 127 for the additional Wiki page needs to list synths that support Bank Selects too. ISymphonic for example.
Supposedly KORG module supports PC. Haven’t tried yet but the support section of their website claims so.
Fugue Machine also supports PC for seamlessly changing projects.
Just tested
Buttersynth pc works fully
Agonizer limited to 128 presets(choice on setting for either favorite or all)
Lagrange and OBx won’t accept PC
Lagrange responds to Program Changes when you add the presets to the 'Program' bank.
If I recall correctly it's described in the help/manual.

Good to know so probably for most Icegear apps
