Mixing and Mastering in AUM
I’ve received a few questions about this lately so I figured I’d start a thread here to share my process and update over time as it evolves.
All of this happens on my iPhone. I’m currently using an iPhone 11 and always update to the newest iOS version within a week.
I first create my song in Cubasis 3 or NanoStudio 2. So far I’ve done three in CB3 and one in NS2 with another on the way. I only add effects into my DAW that require automation. This helps keep the DAW running as smoothly as possible. I’ve found FX to be the most frequent culprit of either DAW crashing.
Once complete, I export the tracks into AudioShare and into AUM using the file player. I do this because AUM is more stable when it comes to routing and adding multiple effects.
Once in AUM, I bus various channels together as appropriate, most often grouping my pads together if nothing else. Each unbussed channel and bus gets TB Equaliser with HQ and No Latency enabled. The master channel also gets TB Barricade at the end. I primarily use presets and tweak from there. Drums get the drum bus preset. Bass gets the bass preset. Pads get the widening preset. I usually go for vocal, brighten, or presence on my lead(s). I usually set AI onto modern pop or 70s and 80s depending.
On the master, I set TB EQ to the band pass preset and widen it out to cut the inaudible frequencies. TB Barricade is set on the loudness monitoring preset. I then turn on compression and limiting. I often set the dither to 24 bit TPDF, the model to analog tape, and the limiter to Loudness++. Honestly not sure what most of these do exactly, but it seems to give me what I want.
I then add other effects as desired. I try to limit it to one or two per channel. TB ReelBus, Enhancer, and Reverb are my primary effects. I may also add either TB ReelBus on a mastering setting or TB EQ on the compressor setting depending on the sound I want.
I’ll then play with the volume of my channels and the limiting and compression in Barricade to get the loudness of the mix where I want it, ensuring 1-2 dB headroom. This also often leads to me tweaking my EQs and other effects as needed to really dial it in. Once it’s there, I record all channels.
This used to be where I stopped. Yesterday, while listening to my songs, I noticed how much quieter they were on SoundCloud compared to others. So I decided to try one last step. I loaded my songs into Grand Finale. I played with the presets til I found the one that I wanted. I reduced the gain and output until I had a solid sound that didn’t clip 0dB. This seemed to give me exactly what I was looking for.

For reference, my most recent song:
Made this in CB3 using all native plug-ins, including the Classic Machines IAP.
Do you have any trick to have some automation in AUM?
No, that’s why FX that need automation go in my DAW. My only real example of this so far has been Dubstation 2.
I use Xequence to automate any AU that has parameters exposed. Works great.
