Scratching, Stuttering, and Retrigger FX

Looking for an app or two that will give me similar effects to the Pocket Operators. I love the scratching, stuttering, retriggering, and reversing effects on the PO 32 and 33. Any apps that give me this same functionality?

  • ummm I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Looperator maybe?

  • GlitchCore, maybe?

Huh. I’ll have to watch some vids as they come out.

  • Effectrix, Looperator, Turnado

Sector https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/sector/id618095247, Replicant 2 https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/replicant-2/id1261900553. Sector in particular is deep, works great inside AUM (unsurprisingly) offers three complementary ways to control the process, and lets you move from precisely placed, hand crafted glitches to full on auto glitch madness, reverse, stutters etc as you wish. Took me a while to get my head round it, but it was worth the effort.

Glitchbreak/Glitchcore? I haven't tried Jamm Pro, but from the video it also looks quite good for what you need!

  • Koala Sampler?
    Launchpad?

Scatterbrain does, and you can use the multi-out feature to “build your own effectrix”. That was what it was designed for :)

  • Effectrix if you host is single out only.
Scatterbrain if your host allows multiout for a modular approach with the most power possible.
Sadly most of the nice hosts are single out only from AU plugins and their developers are....yeah, let's just leave that at their developers are...

    Feeling demotivated by incessant criticism?

    -Glitch Breaks
    -Flux
    -Effectrix(annoys me)
    -Turnado

If I may suggest a combo of apps in lieu of a one size fits all solution.

I think duality per FX AU is ideal.

    I would then combo:

    GlitchCore
    Replicant (Audio Damage)
    Glitch( old app still works)
Future Moments has a good chop app

    Or

I have found for less chance of issues of functionality LIVE performances better to have loops prepared and use apps like Yellowfier/Sector/Samplr/ReSlice with them.
Less issue and less “config” for set up.

Run multi audio signal busses in AUM and mute to enable each.
Coolest things I do is say...Synth Loop...load into Sector, ReSlice, Samplr, and or a Granular synth like the new one from Imaginado (must buy) and beat the sample up with multiple apps for more variety and depth as well as warmth to the chaos.

    Or

Music by Paul has a new very special app that does this get that!

    Hope that helps!

  • Don’t forget AtomizerFX :-)

  • Thanks guys, I’ll have to check some of this out. I have tried out Replicant and Scatterbrain, not really sure how to get the scratching/stuttering effects. I like what they can do, just not sure they can do what I’m actually looking for.

  • I'm a big (new) fan of Sector. I'm sort of astounded by it and 1) how useful I can see it being and 2) how much fun it is.

Can it do randomisation? I'd like to have a more controllable version of AD Replicant where I can add some delay on to specific beats randomly. So for example each time the snare is hit there is a 25?% chance of that beat having some delay applied to it.

  • I've always used Replicant 2 but I recently discovered the Glitch plug in within Zenbeats which is pretty damn good for this as well but only helpful if you're using Zenbeats.

I haven't used Scatterbrain yet but that's my favorite iOS dev so I need to pick that up

  • You will find these apps can do the pocket operator stutter glitch thing x 10 in options and subdivisions etc. The above apps are all oceans approved for dope-ness. I like turnado theist for live audio, but GlitchCore is still proper too for ultra cheap. Ill throw out that a lot of the sampler/;loopers have the fx of gates, scatters , etc. Let us know which you like best. Hails to the pocket operators, I really want that modular new one (not calculator).

  • I mostly use sector for sample glitch/stutter/tape effects it can also randomise parts of the sample. All the effects can be triggered with probability.

The first part bit only Sector. The rest is Scatterbrain and Turnado into the extreme (and too loud, i noticed)

+1. I love how Replicant generatively throws the gliches in for you, according to the parameters you set. Do any of these other glitch effects have generative / probability functions like that?

  • I like me some GlitchCore

  • Can also do some of that with the 4 scenes in enso

Sector really interests me, could you please explain the AUM integration? does it work different than a standard IAA app?

  • AUM and Sector are from the same developer. I hope Sector gets an AU treatment in the future.

@drewinnit : yup, like @Identor said, I just meant it works in AUM well because it comes from the guy that invented AUM. It would indeed be great if @j_liljedahl should ever choose to rework Sector for AU, but as it stands it is still totally mind blowing what it can do. At first, not understanding how it worked, I thought it just created glitches you had little control over (and it can do that) but once I realised the different operation of the three modes, (one of which is basically a step sequencer which lets you place your glitches very precisely), the way the little wavy lines on each sector alter the way that portion of the waveform is played, how to ramp the number of sectors up and down, and how to work with my own samples imported from AudioShare (another one of his) and the huge difference tempo and beat subdivision will naturally make to these - well, glitchtastic fun is to be had. It is by far the most musical and configurable of the glitch tools I have used to date.

  • Thanks guys, my interest has deepened ;)

Sure, they're called "Chaos" settings in Scatterbrain. You can see me "play" them live here in this short demo:

    Cool - thanks! 👍

  • As a good starting point for glitch fx, would you all recommend Scatterbrain or Replicant? Or has another app taken place of these two? Cheers!
