iOS App or solution similar to Ableton Live?

I'm working on a project where I need to trigger loops via a Midi percussion controller (I'm a drummer and can't hit buttons on a something like Launchpad or a keyboard) while also have certain mute groups setup. For example, trigger one drum loop would mute any other drum loops but not affect any melodic loop playing. The Novation Launchpad app would be prefect for this except I can't hit an iPad screen nor a physical Launchpad controller while I'm playing with two sticks. I haven't found a way to midi map Launchpad's app to my midi percussion controller. I've worked with loopy on this, but it doesn't haven't mute groups and isn't really conducive to my setup. Does anyone have another suggestion?

  • I think a lot of people are waiting for something like this, but at the moment nothing hits all those marks. Electrify NXT would be really close, but no MIDI mapping of the clips yet.

  • Does your percussion set have an editor on pc or Mac? If so then this opens up a lot of options. I can only partially envision what your after but possibly Mosaik may be an option when it's released.

I agree with Tarekith, NXT is the closest. I own a copy of NXT it's a great program for clips and it seems to be getting more options with each update.

  • Why not get something cheap like an SPD-6 or something, and then trigger the hits with it, and then use the program of your choice to read the midi hits and play the samples?

  • I'm actually using an Spd-s for midi. It's a bit old and has trouble with samples loading/misfiring, otherwise it might be able to do the trick. I figured doing it all within iOS was more effective and more powerful. I just connect via my Alesis IO dock.

I would do that, but that doesn't give me the mute group options

  • I used Dropbox to move some samples from my desktop computer to Launchpad. That's ok for what it is... But honestly not close enough.

  • Does drums XD have mute groups? If so, this may be what you need....

An audiobus output slot is screaming out for a sampler for Launchpad.

Hey, if Loopy is close to what you want, you can actually create your own mute groups by making a template in a third party app, like MIDI Designer. There's a free version of the app that could do this no problem

And can't Beatmaker 2 be set up to do what the OP is asking? I haven't tried with this one, but it seems like people have had success with MIDI triggering the drum machine in BM 2.

  • @Hmtx - I never really thought about that before - you can use MIDI Designer to do things that couldn't be done with an FCB1010... hmmm. Yer smart!

  • Both Beatmaker2 and NanoStudio support MIDI input and mute groups.

  • FYI, launchpad was just updated to include AudioCopy from other apps into the Launchpad Import library. You have to specify tempo or time on the import, though.

But still no midi learn, which is what I need to launch clips using an external midi percussion pad.

  • Launchpad App is the best solution, you only got to get a launchpad to trigger the clips. It works GREAT, the only draw back is the process to import the samples/loops.

I realize that Launchpad is a solid app, but if you read my original post you'd see why it won't help me in this situation.

  • you can use the StreamByter in MidiBridge to map your pad message to any arbitray set of messages, and Nanostudio works well with that since you just enable its own input (in NS) and then connect to it in MidiBridge.

  • Do any of these apps allow one to set clips to fire in sequence (which one can do in Abelton)? Thanks...
