9th Wonder On Sampling For Kendrick Lamar

Some great little bits in this video:

And a video of his process:

Really inspiring. 👊🏼™️

  • Great share

  • Great stuff! The song Ostavi trag from the first video is from my part of the world, former Yugoslavia.
Amazing how these guys dig up gems, it’s not like this is a popular song from a popular group from these parts, they did a couple albums in the 70s and that’s it.
Ostavi trag translates to leave a mark, and so they did :)

  • Yea NPR has a YouTube series on sampling. I posted another thread about it.

  • I think we've talked about this elsewhere (it's been a long week :)), but I love his analogy to taking a 1000 jumpshots (in other words, practicing your craft and working hard etc).

I love to watch when someone knows their tools and their process soooooo well that they can just get down to business. A joy to watch.

  • Yeah. This was a breath of fresh air for me. Ended up also watching this great Madlib interview that was equally inspiring:

Didn’t realize this was a double post. I hadn’t seen anything posted on 9th Wonder here. What’s the link? Might as well connect the two threads.

  • This is really cool. Started looking for other good rhythm roulettes but this is by far the best one yet. Now i wanna start sampling.

Yup. These videos really inspired me. So glad we have the tools to do this now.

What would you suggest as the Top 5 Tools for BeatMaking if you have a moment to teach.

Now I get why my nephew has 3,000 albums in his garage... seeking fresh sample fodder.
I'm sure emersing yourself in the genre is key to know what's been tagged already. Otherwise it just seems somewhat random and arbitrary but history gives it context beyond just the usual reactions to the groove. But the groove is probably the heart of it
since it's dance music at it's core.

Now I'm on a YouTube tour of "how to sample".

Please report back in suitably digested form (he says, sending a softball over the friendly fence for hitting...)

  • So... drambo or samplr, which is better for this type of producing?

For tools I’d suggest any of the following:
    Drambo
    BeatMaker3
    impc pro
    ReSlice
    NanoStudio 2
I think it’s up to how you want to groove and what feels natural to the way you work.

I’ll be fumbling along this next week but i think it will be some combo of Drambo and ReSlice.

Awesome. I own the lot. (Kinda hoping the was still a gem I didn't read about).

I think I'll get serious about NS2 now that it has great samples available from PatchStorage...
which I will insist everyone get and install before it's too late. Really good free sounds in the
most efficient DAW. End AUv3 tyranny... NS2!

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Sarah2ill is a specialist in sampling and beatmaking with Maschine and it's always a joy to see her at work
