ISO: Tiny interface (again)

Couple of threads I could find out there (including one I started a few years back) but nothing that ticks all of the boxes.

https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/29411/looking-for-a-tiny-interface-🤔
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/21222/smallest-audio-interface

I'm searching yet again for a tiny-as-possible interface. Hoping new folks and new devices might yield what I'm looking for.

Requirements:

  • Stereo input. Preferably line level.
  • MIDI I/O. 1/8" jacks are fine
  • 100% iPad powered (no powered hubs, etc)
  • Smaller the better. This is for sitting by a river.

Don't even need audio output (iPad headphone jack is fine).

Right now, it looks like the PreSonus AudioBox USB 96 is my best bet though I'm not yet entirely sure it'll work with an iPad since they also make the "AudioBox iTwo" which seems to be iOS dedicated. I wish it were the size of one of the iRigs though. Or the size of this tiny rode thingy would be best.

Option 2 seems to be: Behringer U-Control UCA (the RCA-only audio I/O thing), a usb hub and a USB->MIDI cable.

Even cheaper.. Does the job.. I use Behringer UMC 204 HD.. But to be fair I don’t use the midi ports.. As all I use is VST synth.. But I did get it for cheaper price in sale a year ago.. Made of metal & robust.. Still going strong..

  • IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo I/O is small, high quality and loaded with features, but is on the expensive side, and not sturdy.

  • I still sometimes use my Line6 MobileIn with a 30-pin to lightning adapter to record sounds on my iPad while monitoring thru the iPad 3,5mm jack and using nanoKey Studio over bluetooth.

It’s the only interface I always keep with me when there is a need to record line-level sources, too bad my iPhone 8 doesn’t have a proper headphone jack...

  • Checkout Zoom U24. It can be battery powered or even connected to a powerbank.

I have the Zoom U22 which works great with my iPad. It is smaller, very portable, but doesn’t have midi.

Not that tiny and I’ve only had experience of their larger interfaces and consoles (which are good) so cant comment on audio quality

Thanks for these. Looks like the 204HD is the only one with MIDI. Does that work for you when you directly connect it to the iPad (no powered hub)?

That one is definitely on the short list (everything I need, perfect size) but that custom USB connector puts me off every time I look at it. I've never met a power supply I didn't later lose!

Do you know if that'll run off of iPad bus power? It's hard to grok from the product descriptions I'm finding. Looks great otherwise. Thank you!

  • Well that's handsome! I can't find it for sale yet but the price:size:features seem spot on. Thank you.

Your Welcome.. TBH, i've never tried.. But i would assume the Midi ports would be standard midi protocol.. Other wise there would be an uproar with everybody in the music industry.. I use USB midi controller with USB connection, but use iPad as sound source mainly.. Also, i was going to test it out now you mention it, but my other gear is at my folks place, & i cannot get over there to test it out for you.. Lockdown restrictions.. So would guess that if midi out from iPad is midi standard, so would midi receive midi information into soundcard.. If its not, then what's the hell in having Midi info on iOS for???.....(then all other midi soundcards will not work?... iOS would become Sandboxed as an Musical device).... :D

I've got the older iRig Pro - does the job, but the connections aren't great - tends to cut out sometimes and needs a wriggle to get it going again. Not that impressed, considering I've hardly used it, though the new model may be better.

Looks great but no MIDI. :(

  • Reconsidering going the hub+tiny behringer RCA thingy+usb MIDI cable. Thinking if I Velcro wrap it all together it'll basically feel like a single device, eh? Plus, I already own a small hub+usb MIDI cable.

** I have the Zoom U22 which works great with my iPad**. It is smaller, very portable, but doesn’t have midi.

Could I ask you whether line in and Hi-Z input can be used together or not? My idea is to use that Zoom as a simple "joiner" for signals from iPad (USB) and PC/laptop (analog line in). Would it be possible?

No, it wouldn't according to the instructions
"The MIC/Hi-Z jack is disabled when a cable is connected to the LINE IN jack."
