Let me know your thoughts. I almost didn’ t make the track because it was a bit...well, yeah.
Starts off with a slow pop progression, goes to retro rock, then amps to a rock bridge, before settling on a mellow rock ballad.
Anyways, song was done completely on GarageBand for iOS. Did use Blackhole Reverb for the additional effect aroud the 30s mark

This is really good. The song sounds entirely credible to my ears (saying this because you indicate uncertainty about it). It does all the right things (and the opening is nicely different from anything obvious) and - most tellingly - makes me want to hear it again.
I think there are things you could improve in the production. You show a mastery of pacing - you know when to bring in new elements and the build is very well controlled - but the sounds (while excellently chosen for the most part) seem separate from each other in this mix. In the busier sections I would do some surgical EQing to make space for the key elements (the voice gets a bit lost, for example) and I would add a room reverb to the bass to bring out some authenticity to the sparseness of the intro. I think some careful compression would also help.

Thanks. The voice was where I was struggled with at the rock chorus. I even tried doubling the vocal at the chorus but it just got drowned, even when I reduced the other volumes. When I did lower the guitar, it lost the “amped” effect.
Selective EQ’ing...that might be it. I believe the guitar and the voice are on the same band, which might explain what’s going on (phase cancellation)
Compression was on my effect list on the vocal, but I’m still unskilled with it. Ended up sounding too monotone, when I wanted the vocals to seem like there was some “weight, and reflection”.
Haven’t tried Room Reverb on the bass. Gotta give that a go. Thanks for the tip.
Maybe it’s a sign I should continue producing in Cubasis? Or just get good at using GarageBand.
@horsetrainer Thanks. Not really a singer but this was a good project to do a bit more vocal production.
In any mix with several instruments I always carve out as much of the signal as is needed. You brain can’t process a lot of it anyway if something is else is in the same frequency range - you can choose which thing they hear by cutting back the rest. This is especially true in the mids. Trying to preserve the ‘purity’ of the original signal is often just going to prevent a mix from sounding good.
If you use something with a visualizer like Pro Q3 you can soon learn which are the frequencies it’s better to remove in any given mix. Lots of instruments have all kinds of low rumble things going on as well - a few Iike that and you’re just building up mud in your mix. Carve it out...
I added a lot of the tips you mentioned and it's sounding a lot clearer. Thanks. I'll most likely upload the final project to YouTube, extend the song a little, and maybe update the Soundcloud. This is the first project where I'm not actually using BarkFilter to finish up the project...(yet...idk how it'll sound after the tweaking is done)
About Pro Q3, a lot of people mention that Tonebooster is the same (or similar). Would you recommend that?

Very cool Sam! Singing is one those real tricky things to get into musically...I mean you get a chord book and an acoustic and you’re playing guitar, same with piano- chord book, scale chart, practice...you eventually are playing chords and accompanying yourself.
Unless it’s 100% natural or you get vocal pedagogy instruction vocals are more mysterious. You have a nice timbre to your voice and can sing in tune which is half the battle. I’d keep practicing and really try to work on projecting & finding your voice. It can be embarrassing to sing loudly especially at home with people in the house, but in the 3 months I had voice lessons that was something rammed home: great singers project and learn to breathe with their diaphragm.

great tune, great singing voice albeit it gets a bit fragile at times, which actually is not a good thing in this particular case. If I was to be picky it would be with the drums, which sound like an 80's drum machines trying to emulate a real drummer. I'd either go with a full on synthetic or use better apps for drums as these don't sound realistic at all. It feels like every drum sample is exactly the same which sounds very robotic when there's the same sound played in quick succession. That is unless that's what you wanted, I mean post-kitch etc.
Also I'm noticing some artefacts in the quieter part of the song most evident in 'all the way' bit of the lyrics. Sounds like a gate effect with a very short release resulting in a pop. Did you use any noise suppression software?
Any recommendations for drum/drum apps? Also, had the same issue with balancing the bass.
Not sure for noise surpression. I did use Brusfri, and manually toned down what I could.
Hi I am a singer. I thought the vocals sounded personal which is good sounds like you mean every word, nice phrasing and in tune.
Best advice I ever had is to do a lot of humming from gentle to gradually loud as when your mouth is shut your throat is relaxed. Experiment with dynamics, tones while humming. Breath in deep and release slowly
The trick is to slowly open your mouth and forming the various vowels while preserving the tone and the relaxed throat. This has helped me alot to get edge into the tone when needed and not hurt the throat even when singing with a loud band.

I wouldn't know as I'd normally use real drums or synthetic. Some people here like apps by Luis Martinez, you could check some yt demos. I've put drum samples into Drambo's sampler and they sound pretty decent but I guess that's a long winded way of doing it.
As for artefacts, listen to the word 'way' at the end of third line. There is a distinct pop which then repeats in exactly the same way at 0:25. No biggie but if you're trying to make it as professional as possible you might either change release on brusfri (not sure if possible, I don't have the app) or just fade it manually.

Adjusted the drums, changed some transitions, and mastered the track. Couldn’t get rid of the pop because I had already done too many edits and merged. the track. Was actually caused by fading the track down before merging. Lesson learnt. Trim the artefacts, instead of fading.
Uploaded what (i guess) is the final Soundcloud version. Learnt a lot from the repeated takes.

You're a song writer and a musician without a doubt. If you want to add singer to that list you just need to make more of these and song a lot. As the arrangement builds here your voice gets buried and having the power to up your game as it needs to cut though is all that's needed.
I loved the arrangement and the fresh musical instincts.
I hope you keep sharing your journey and find benefit from the "notes" you get here. There's a lot of
musical talent here but it's not focused so you need to take what helps you a discard everything that doesn't.
This is probably the best pop tune for today's audience I've heard here or might find easily on SoundCloud. I'm following you now. If I need energy I'll try to clone the ideas in one of your tracks to
be relevant and not follow into my 70 year old instincts for making music.
I wish we had more contemporary music types here but given IOS and Hip Hop this style is out there and not here.

I'll definitely work on my singing so it's a bit more pronounced. Learnt a ton if vocal mixing tips today. Also, found out that the microphone on my Samsung phone is a lot better than the one on my iPhone.
Get reasonable audio interface like Presonus, Focusrite or the much better United Audio stuff with a
Chinese Condenser Mic bundle like this:

Or go the Blue Snowball USB route to save more getting started. It will sound like you singing right into your face. Then you can start EQ'ing and filtering out rather than pulling up the volume to be heard.
There was the crazy mic deal here with $4.60 mic's because they included a cable for iPhone and the mic needs Phantom Power so they need to dump the lot to avoid thousands of refunds. Their screw up and my gain. I just needed the MIC holder and $4.60 was a deal for that one part. That cable turned out to be good for use with dynamic mics. Those Chinese mic made good mic's at home cheap possible. Of course, really good mic's a a joy to hear even more details. Like "good" in any category. But good enough is pretty damn good. Mic's in phone do have character but usually to make things sound bad in an interesting way.
@McD -Great recommendations all around. Thanks for the tips. I had a Behringer interface but I was working on something else and kinda opened it up. Hopefully I can finish that project, but that's for another time.
Maybe it's time I get the Focusrite interface. Although I've also been looking at the Zoom u-24 or U-44.
