Sugarbytes Apps with MPE CCs

Maybe this is of interest for a few: I found out, it‘s possible to play factory/Aparillo/Unique with MPE controllers, including Aftertouch and CC74.
I‘m using the sensel morph, lightpad block etc.
When going into learn mode in any of the mentioned Apps, any movement on the controller will register as CC74. The trick is, to use a lightpad block for setup (Aftertouch coming from the morph somehow doesn‘t register in learnmode): CC74 is easy, since any movement will register thus, but for Aftertouch you need to have your hand already resting on the lightpad, when going into learnmode, then press a little. After this is setup, you can use the morph (as well as any other MPE-controller, I guess) for triggering and manipulation. In factory‘s settings, you may as well unclick „CC preset isolate“, so that you can use this in any preset you‘re selecting in the future.
...I was pretty happy to find this out, hopefully somebody else will, too.
Cheers, t

  • Ta, I’ll be checking this out next time I have an evening free :)

  • OK. Your advice exposed an unexplored area of MIDI for me regarding MPE implementation details.
    Google to the rescue -Roli

One channel (usually Channel 1) is used for global messages – data such as preset changes and pedal positions are transmitted on this channel to apply to all notes equally. The global channel is set by the "MPE Zone." When the MPE Zone is the Lower Zone, Channel 1 is used for global messages. When the MPE Zone is Upper Zone is, Channel 16 is used for global messages.

The remaining channels (usually Channels 2–16) are used to transmit notes and expressive data – including note-on velocity, pitch bend, channel pressure (aftertouch), CC74 (brightness), and note-off (release) velocity – on a note-per-channel basis. The expressive data will only apply to the note which is on the same channel.

OK. Running Velocity Keyboard into MIDI Spy:

All I'm seeing is Note ON/OFFS and Pitch Bends... no Aftertouch or Brightness CC74. So I'm guessing
this might not be useful info for me until I get an MPE hardware controller with these extra features.
iPhone 3D Touch on some older phones?

    Thanks for the research prompt.

Is the aftertouch and cc74 coming out per channel though, or is it applied to all notes? And how about pitch bend? Can you play several notes at the same time and apply pitchbend to one without it affecting the pitch of the other notes? @animal

  • It‘s not Channel Aftertouch (or CC74), because sugarbytes don‘t care about implementing MPE, but at least it reacts at all to AT, which wasn‘t clear to me (in Unique and Aparillo, you don‘t see the visual „command-confirmation“ appear in the learn-pop-up, in factory you do, and, of course, the knobs do move when Remote-controlled).

Yeah! They say it’s too hard to re-write the code 🙄
