I have a friend in the middle of nowhere Nicaragua who's meeting a dude on a dirt road to buy a second hand iPad and, naturally, had questions

Your friend should make the seller install Phone Doctor Plus. It will not only identify the iPad but it will run tests for functionalities. When they meet, your friend will even see if everything is okay.
