Yeah, @BlueGreenSpiral! AN2015 is very cool!
It seems that its spiritual successor is the Yamaha FM Essentials app. At least it shares some similarities (too bad I need a Yamaha MX to unlock the full app)
Moonshine AU looks great! Separate stereo granulation, surprised more of the granular synths don’t implement this. Lot of other good recommendations here by the look of things, pity so many aren’t AU. Droneo and Hexaglyphics stand out among the several mentioned here that I quickly checked YouTube vids to hear
unklepop DRUM is so obscure it's gone missing from the App Store, yet Dj Puzzle used several instances in a recent MM-1 demo.
I unlocked mine at the local music store. That's obscure, all right.
Tin Pan Rhythm
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tin-pan-rhythm/id963594351
This app is amazing, thank you for pointing me in it's direction!
That’s why we’re here friend. That’s why we’re here. To feed the beast! Cheers, RR
Tin pan. Sigh. All these old loves. Tears in rain etc. But seriously, Tin Pan coulda been a contender...
In other news, this is already my favorite thread for ages.
@Bill_Brasky i took the plunge and got moonshine AU. Love love love it. Excellent recommendation.
i’m teeling yaa guy’s, don’t sleep on this... with the iap for midi out it’s mad fun
Collecting obscure and interesting apps is kind of a passion of mine, and I’ll happily take things that have no inter connectivity at all, knowing that I can always use screen video recording and AudioStretch’s https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/audiostretch/id571863178 ability to effortlessly strip out wavs from these.
Cycle https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/cycle-time-lag-accumulator/id1403146926 , runs in AUM as an IAA, a ‘Time Lag Accumulator’ with a limited but useful set of it’s own voices, and the ability to output wav or MIDI files you can use in Atom or Photon to drive other apps, or simply record it’s own audio in Fileplayer, great for creating decaying or permanent (just turn the padlock on) drones. Tip: You can bend a note by dragging each key toward its neighbour.
A +1 for the beautiful hang drum and tuned percussion sounds Oval https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/oval-synth/id1113634392 makes, an orphan app for hardware no longer available.
ABCDEFGHIJ’LMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz/id358824534 is fun, let’s you create moving patterns of somewhat random vocalised phonics of individual letters, which you can bend towards Reichian minimalist purposes with the aforementioned screen recording technique and some judicious AudioShare editing.
A similar playing with letters approach from Cryptoclash which turns anything you type into bouncing balls of noise https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/cryptoclash/id469780999.
Talking of bouncing balls, Physicles https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/physicles/id1409156444 is a great little set of random note generators bringing gravity to the Bram Bos style Collider/Particles random MIDI generator party. By adjusting flows, carefully setting things spinning and strategically drawing platforms for the balls, you can make the results as random or tuneful as you want. And it’s AU!
More drone machines, allegedly with some IAA connectivity but with a persistent half off the screen rendering bug meaning they are still best used with the screen recording trick as sample creation fare are DR Om https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/dr-om/id555409573 and Noisemusick https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/dr-om/id555409573 boxes, emulating physical hardware, one an apparently popular school science oscillator box, the other a ‘crackle box’ static/glitch creator.
From the same dev, Fluxly, https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/fluxly/id1376844813, a sample based physics looper and Cryptozoologic https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/cryptozoologic/id1483355417 are toys which both create interesting glitchy 8 bit style noises for screen record capture fun. I really wish this dev would take their own work a little more seriously and produce a more controllable version of the concepts on show here - they are great.
A shout out for AtmoSound https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/atmosound-for-ipad/id1041051496 which has zero connectivity but via the screen recording trick is a great source of epic touch based sonic textures....
And I could go on. But now I’ve got to read back up in this thread and see what I’ve missed.
We were just talking about it in the Snug...
I swear if Triq and F/Beat were forced into little OP-1 boxes there'd be more money than Christmas etc.
@Svetlovska how does the hang drum in oval compare to the one in fingerbeats (which is free, I think)?
Ha, doesn’t matter, turns out oval is free anyway, will try for myself hehe
Excellent tip.
Sounds great!
I like it too. Weird little AU but cool.
I loved it so much I ended up getting ringabell too. That one seems like a bit of a dud. The automation sections for comb filter and ring Mod appear to do nothing. Can u confirm? @Bill_Brasky
Ring mod in rm-1 by Kai Aras is much more sophisticated I think, though it lacks comb filter option.
Not really obscure given that it’s listed in “Our Apps” on the forum page but I can’t believe that Samplebot doesn’t get more attention.
Here’s an odd ball one that’s kinda cool , although I am terrible at it
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dhalang-mg/id1140174276
@Svetlovska Good tip. Want to run DR Om through the PolyIvoks Filter and pretend I've been very talented/fortunate in hunting down old obscure equipment.
Earhoof gets my award
Love Earhoof (and Dr Om
)
My curiosity is piqued by this Earhoof that cannot be found on the App Store....
Phonopaper by Alexander Zolotov is an obscure favorite of mine! It turn images into cool sounds! Plus it's free!
PhonoPaper is based on the classic Virtual ANS app — which I never forget the name of because I instantly conjure-up images in my mind of a "virtual Anus!" 🤣
I never picked up ringabell. RM1 works for me enough though I’m not a big ring mod user. Shoot an email to the dev, see what they say.
3 old sequencer apps I still find inspiration from, great for sample fodder.
