Music Apps on iPhone - Can't Use Keyboard and Sound Output
Hi Audiobus Cats -
My Android phone was stolen, so I'm trying my first Apple phone; iPhone 11. I have the iPad Pro 12.9 (also stolen, paid the thief $80 ransom money to get it back...), and lots of cool music apps, many of which now populate my new iPhone. HOWEVER, I have the "camera connection kit" and the "lighting to audio"dongle. When I combine them, I get the "Accessory not supported" error message. This is weird, as the dongle works fine by itself (so I can plug in my AKG K-271 Mk. ii headphones). I need the "camera connection kit" (which also works fine by itself) to plug the USB type A plug from my keyboard controller.
Here's why this is a problem: I have the Ravenscroft, the Neo Soul Keys, and other similar apps, and need to use an external keyboard to play them through something other than the phone's speaker. How can I do accomplish this, given the described error? Is there a workaround?

The extra lightning port on the camera connection kit (CCK) is only for power. You need a usb hub, which you plug into the CCK. Then you plug your devices into the hub. Search for threads concerning CCK/ USB hub.
Thank you for your answer! I looked at one of the CCK - USB threads. However, my keyboard works fine (it uses the USB port on the CCK). It's the audio (headphones; which I interface via the dongle to the extra lighting port on the CCK) that doesn't work. So, how to use both my keyboard and audio at the same time? A USB hub doesn't have an audio port. Otherwise, all I get is audio out of the phone's speakers. Thanks....
@Skyscrapersax Right. To go this route, you need all USB accessories. An audio interface for in/out, or just a DAC for phones. There are lots available, priced from modest to extreme. I've a little one from Monoprice that works well. When the DAC is connected, it takes over audio output, overriding the speakers.
Ouch. All I want is audio out, for a speaker. What happened is that some jerk stole my Android phone, so I'm trying out an iPhone for the first time. I find the iPhone screen small (I'd get a Samsung Note 10+ otherwise; as I have really large hands and 62 year old eyeballs). Very cool that many of my iPad music apps seem to work on it, but totally useless if I can't get audio out to speakers with a piano keyboard controller. I don't want any more doo dads or gizmos dangling from a phone that I have to have. I don't have USB phones, speakers or anything else. Can't I just get both audio out and USB at the same time? This is kind of make or break for the phone. Thank you....
You can’t use the CCK for audio out and usb at the same time.
The closest thing to what you want is a Korg Plugkey. You would connect the midi keyboard to it via 5 pin din and can connect headphonea/line out to a mixer etc.
Not cheap and another gizmo but the only one you’d need for this, it has a lightning connector so you wouldn’t need the CCK or a USB hub.
You can get some very cheap camera connection kit alternatives that have headphones and usb along with charging ports but I’d be loathe to trust them.
One other alternative would be to use a Bluetooth adaptor for your keyboard and use Bluetooth MIDI so the keyboard would be wireless. Latency isn’t an issue with MIDI as it would be using Bluetooth headphones.
The iPhone has built in midi over Bluetooth support.

If your keyboard has 5 pin MIDI you should be able to plug the Bluetooth adaptor into the keyboard directly then just plug your headphones into the lightning port.
If your keyboard doesn’t have MIDI out port (just usb) then you’re better off with an audio + midi interface.
I use a zoom u24 with my iPhone.
The u24 has MIDI IN/OUT too and works perfectly (I have one)
But again it all depends on whether your keyboard has ‘proper’ MIDI ports. Most do I think.
I have a bunch of keyboards; some have proper MIDI, but the one I have with me in La La Land does not. The whole point of this is ULTRA portability - the keyboard in question only weighs 6 pounds and plays surprisingly well. If not for this connectivity issue, I could gig on piano with almost zero weight equipment. That's the goal, so the extra do dads kinda suck.
I bought the iPhone 11, which is small for my hands (I'm six foot six). And my 62 year old eyeballs deem it small, too.
I'd rather the iPhone Pro Max (same connectivity issue), BUT for the same price ($1200ish...), I could keep the iPhone 11 and get an iPad mini, which still has the audio jack. It's a GIANT phone, or at least can be.
Of course, they are out of stock....
But it looks like it demands MIDI ports. The keyboard in question does not have them; only USB type A. Does the Zoom u24 work with USB type A? I have their Q8 video camera; it's great.
It’s a shame that your keyboard doesn’t have MIDI. that’s kind of like the equivalent of Apple removing the headphone jack!
The U22 would be perfect as you won’t need MIDI, but you will need a USB hub.
USB HUB -> Apple CCK -> iPhone
U22 -> Hub
Keyboard -> Hub
Headphones -> U22
The U22 would also have the benefit of allowing you to record audio into your iPhone and have a nice quality headphone amp.
However, a more elegant solution would be one of these:

That would remove the need for an additional hub. Which can be the weak link in these setups as they can be notoriously unreliable.
With one of these it would work like this:
AIRHUB -> Apple CCK -> iPhone
Keyboard —> AIRHUB
Headphones -> AIRHUB.
Those are both interesting solutions ..... I've never heard of the Air Hub, so thanks. The keyboard that I propose for this set-up is only 6 pounds, and I can use it as a Ketar! So it's OK with no MIDI ports. But actually, even on my Kawai MP11 (80 pounds, 3 grand, with every port imaginable), I usually just use the USB out instead of the actual MIDI ports. The idea of this rig is ultra portability. Out of your proposed solutions, you favor the Air Hub?
