Genome random delay of 0 to 2 bars with AB3 clock

Hi,

Has anyone experienced this issue with Genome and AB3:

  • add Genome in AB3 audio track (with Ableton Link enabled in Genome)
  • put a random drum machine in AB3
  • go into Genome and create an empty pattern
  • press AB3 play
  • notice a random delay of 0 to 2 bars in Genome before the playhead moves
  • stop and restart AB3, observe again a random delay
  • ...

Is there any way to make Genome reliably start in sync with AB3, with zero delay? (I tried disabling Link inside Genome, but that seems to kill the synchronization with AB3 entirely.)

BM

PS: Trying to get back into ios music production after 4/5 years, but the world has changed a lot :-)

    Welcome back to the playground
Don’t quote me on this (I don’t have the device with me) but you may need to set Genome up as the clock master...
I will test some ideas a bit later

  • What iOS version are you using? Since moving to 13 it’s been really flakey... midi not going out, etc...

    Thanks :-)

Is that as simple as selecting Genome as "midi clock source" under AB3's "midi clock sync"?

    Great, thanks!

And make sure you’ve got Genome’s clock selected in Genome...but again don’t quote me, I’m working from memory and that’s definitely not ahh uhh what was I saying?

First things first ,does the other app support link ?

Yes, I tried with ispark, FunkBox and DM-1.

  • Hi,

Tried out @Littlewoodg 's "make Genome the master clock" idea, and it partially worked using the setup below, even though there's a slight time slip between Genome and AB3/DM-1, yielding a difference of 1 bpm.

However, when adding AudioKit's Synth One in AB3 as midi destination (receiving clock from AB3, which got it from Genome), then pressing AB3's play button, the clock speed of Genome suddenly doubles during the 2nd or 3rd bar. Is this a known issue?

It’s happened to me as well, it’s due I think to two apps trying to be the clock, (and/or one app is the clock but two apps say so- in other words the slave doesn’t have to have the master selected)

In the picture, you may not need genome selected, and it seems you don’t want to have a midi destination for AB3 selected..worth a try anyways

  • Hi @Littlewoodg ,

I got things to work reliably by turning off Link in Genome, opting for an external clock instead in Genome's options, then in AB3 to explicitly send out clock to Genome. Works like a charm now.

    Thanks for the advice!

Glad you sorted it- I realized my use case with Genome was long before Link, and AB3 midi (before AB3 actually), Genome doing notes and clock through virtual midi...simpler times for this simpleton
