  • I like the Baby Grand in Colossus and the UVI Ravenscroft the most.

How does Soundfonts compare to Bs-16i?
Or, to put it another way, if I already have Bs-16i, is there any point in me also having Soundfonts?

I have been a long time user of Bs-16i and love it. But I have quite a number of sf2 files loaded into it and I can only have one active at a time.
Ie loading an AU preset does not switch to the sf2 that contains said preset.

Soundfonts AU does switch to the sf2 needed by a AU preset and that alone makes it very useful for me.
It does not contain efx like Bs-16i if that matters to you. So far Soundfonts AU has exceeded my expectations. Lite on cpu too.
Thanks for sharing this gem @White 😎

  • Reviving this thread with a specific question:
I can not with any joy use a piano that is bright. Anything named “Rock piano” or “bright piano” is per definition a no-go. I want my piano to sound like Jan Johansson in a velvet clad library on a rainy day. (And no, this is not about eq.)
Also it has to sound like you are not inside the piano. (As in, mics in the room - yes, mics in the piano - no.)
And I will take “character” over hi-fi any day.

If anybody here shares my piano preferences and have discovered something pleasing (auv3), please tell. Thanks!

  • @LarsDaniel in Scaler 2 there is a great felt piano which sounds mild and calm. And it's free to try.

  • BeatHawk added a Studio Grand expansion that has a lot of softness.

Pure Piano has a substantial soft side.

  • Great! Thanks comrades. I am learning the quirks of importing stuff into AudioLayer right now. 🥳

  • Yep! Audiolayer will play Logic (EXS24) instruments as well and there’s a handful of free, great sounding instruments on pianobook.

    +1 Decent Sampler

Also, Numa Player covers a lot of ground for free

Oh yes, I did not know about Decent Sampler. That, and AudioLayer certainly opens some interesting doors. 👍🏻

I think the Salamander piano sounds great. I have loaded into AudioLayer. For a darker sound , I use AudioLayer’s filter to Damien the high frequencies.

  • Ravenscroft Croft, which is on sale at 1/2 off

  • I don’t know about “best” because I’m far from expert but I’ll tell you that the piano I use the most is the MU Waverley Mellopiano. It’s a $.99 iap in moodunits.

Just came to add this :-)
Scaler in it’s free state comes with a beautiful felt piano. Highly recommended

Salamander is still one of the best free pianos. I think though getting it into iOS is a little bit of pain. The download is in .tar.xz format or something like that. How does one unzip this in iOS files app? I think you have to use 7Zip or something on the PC to unpack that type of archive file, re-zip the library, and then upload it to a cloud drive (iCloud, DropBix, etc.) to then download the .zip version to your iOS device. Maybe there's an easier way?

I don’t know of a better sounding free piano than Salamander. I downloaded to my Mac, untarred them, zipped them and airdropped to my iPad. I imported it into AudioLayer. It couldn’t have taken more than a few minutes for the whole process.

I seem to recall that I might have needed to adjust the volume of the release layer that provides hammer noise.

    I am not

Oh, wow. Yes just tried it, - very nice. Would never guessed to find a piano there. 😄
But for “real” playing it would need like three velocity zones or so. But still useful. So thanks for the tip.

  • you are welcome. Yeah of course its not too fancy. I think the main part of Scaler is actually not the piano or any other sound it comes with ;) however, I think the felt is quite nice to be sequenced with other instruments too. Enjoy, mate!
