OT : Free* BBC Orchestral sample library from Spitfire audio

£49 for the discover library or free (after 14 days) if you fill out a long survey.

Don’t bother getting it for free if you dislike filling out surveys.

They also have some really cool free “Labs” libraries.

Spitfire makes some of the best (and most expensive) orchestral sample libraries there are. They make some really nice free stuff too.

They also have a competition on at the Moment to score a scene from Westworld. I’d love to try it if I had the time. First prize is their ‘everything’ drive that comes with £20k of libraries.

Might be a cool project for someone here :-)

I recently installed (free) their 'Soft Piano' (Recorded at Air Edel Studios, London, this sound has become a favourite of musicians and composers across the globe. The soft tone is achieved by placing a thin strip of felt between the hammers and the strings).

    It's lovely.

It's desktop-only though, isn't it? Or have you found a way to get it working on iOS?

Def. desktop only over here. I was just seduced by the idea of the little fingers taping the felt between the hammers and the strings :)

They replaced the fingers with felt?...

I did this. Use AutoSampler (google it) and you get an EXS you can play in Audiolayer

  • Thanks @klownshed I did the survey - I'll check these sounds out in 14 days.

If you want good orchestral sounds on your phone, the London Symphony Orchestra samples in Notion are excellent! Here's a quick example exported straight out of the app.

I emailed Spitfire about releasing labs and/or originals on iOS and they answered that it has been in the talks. It surely would help if some more people would ask them about it.
    Just saying... ;)
At least there are some Spitfire instruments in StaffPad already. That might have been a first step for them so hopefully there will be more steps soon.

Didn’t know that about it StaffPad.

Not bad at all. Would you say that the IAPs are worth it? If so, the whole shebang or any specific favourites?

I got the whole shebang, just in case I needed a banjo, harpsichord, lion's roar ensemble. The orchestral sounds are great - the LSO at Abbey Road, apparently. Everything sounds good and looking at the app size there's over 4GB's of samples, so I think it's worth it. The in-house reverb is not bad, but it's better to export and use Toneboosters or something.

Speaking of Spitfire Audio, I find co founder, Christian Henson’s YouTube channel immensely enjoyable.

Full of varied topics, nature walks and creative discussions, a 20 minute video can fly by.

  • This video shows what’s possible with the free sample library:

Sound incredible considering the cost and the fact that it’s only a 200 MB library. Good stuff.

They would probably sell a ton of these if they made it into an iOS app.

    Thanks for the heads up.

The survey wasn't that long, only 37 quick questions. Took me only 5 mins
Waiting 2 weeks to get my download link is harder for me :)

It will be interesting to compare this library to VSCO 2 Community Edition, another free orchestral library

  • Just rushed in a late entry for the Spitfire/Westworld Scoring Competition mentioned in the OP. Was not done on iOS, but I did use some Nembrini desktop apps for the guitars - the Cali Reverb sounds awesome.

  • What an awesome sample set for free. What would be the best way to get this into iOS? AudioLayer? Synthjacker?
