do people even use the opz
They should, it's pretty fun.
go to instagram and search #opz , holy shittons of videos
Only had mine for a week but it’s one of the better products I’ve purchased in a long time. OP-Z is a very deep machine.
@Samflash3 do you have either Sam?
Yup. A lot.
Nope. I was thinking of getting one before I got an iPad. Now that I have the iPad, I keep wondering if I would still get a ton of value out of it.
The OP-1 (and Z) only does music (well, there's a helicopter game I've never opened on the OP-1). If you have an iron will, the ipad can do most of what they can do, and much they can't. But I get music done on the OP-1, and it rewards time spent with it. Its all-in-one-box approach means it's hard to use it with your other gear, but it's constantly inspiring. The OP-Z is very different, as it's centred around a sequencer. It could work well with AUM and your ios apps. I'm using Deluge in that way at the moment.
If you have both, they work really well together connected by USB. Just switch off MIDI clock IN and OUT on the OP-Z, and it will sync perfectly with the OP-1.
That is counter intuitive, but it works. Press play on the Z, and the OP-1 starts from the beginning of its current loop. Press play on the OP-1, and the OP-Z starts from part way through its own loop, so it is always synced. It works really well.
Then, you have access to the OP-Z sequencer from the OP-1, you can play the OP-Z with the bigger OP-1 keyboard, you can record the OP-Z to tape (with extra cables).
NO. Don't tempt me!
This way lies madness and the poorhouse (within which I already have one foot ....@mistercharlie do you find yourself still using the OP-1 or was it a passionate affair that cooled?
@JohnnyGoodyear I go for long periods without using it, but as soon as I pick it up and sample something from the radio, I’m off again. I love it. Apart from my guitar, it’s the thing I’m least likely to sell.
I take it you don't have children...
I got an OP-Z in January and use it regularly. The fact that it has Bluetooth MIDI, built-in audio over USB, and was designed from the offset to work with iOS makes it an invaluable tool for me.
That said, the factory sounds can be a bit thin. TE said from day one that it’s a “sequencer with synth capabilities,” and it shows. It takes a while to dial in some of the synth engines.
I recommend following B0LT on Instagram for an example of what the OP-Z can do
I've heard you can get good money for them.
Will check him out. Thanks for the tip. Have you checked out https://op1.fun ? It’s a fantastic website I’ve been using to “borrow” some samples for my makeshift OP-1 (Reslice + Koala Sampler).
Also recommend the podcast Small Operations (mostly Op-1 and OP-Z music, interviews, and chat)
Cuckoo, Red Means Recording, and Blezzbeats all excellent for TE stuff on youtube
In one short week I have completed and mixed three tracks with OP-Z and that probably has something to do with it not having a screen. I love making music on my iPad but I’m constantly worried about cpu overload, emails popping up, my interface not working correctly, crackles etc. with the OP-Z, I charge it while I’m sleeping, battery lasts a long time, if the factory sounds aren’t working for me I quickly plug into the iPad and grab a bunch of sounds and within seconds I am sequencing them. Everything can be sequenced, step components can be stacked, tape mode is great and can also be sequenced. Patterns can have different lengths, easily making interesting poly rhythms. The imbedded microphone can sample anything quickly. For me, it’s just amazing.
@Bill_Brasky Do you mix on the OP-Z and bounce to a stereo recording?
Yep. With help of the app.
op1 was the worst thing i’ve ever owned. i sold mine after 3 months
What didn't you like?
