Bedroom pop, the perfect genre for lockdown

“Take out that dusty keyboard and just start trying things. Nobody is watching.”

Yeah I saw that. Though for some of us, nobody was watching before lockdown anyway.

  • Yeah, the only one watching me is the cat trying to get in the studio (he's a wire chewer).

Some interesting music to check out in that article, Ariel Pink and Washed Out are new to me, just listening to Ariel Pink now on Spotify and he's pretty good.

  • I read this earlier and thought to post it here but didn’t in the end. Good read.

Long-time fan of bedroom pop and Ariel Pink, who first caught my attention at a gig where there were signs up saying that, 'Due to issues with HM Customs, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti will no longer be performing.' I was intrigued! Went on the internet the next day and heard 'Immune To Emotion':

I remained intrigued! Immediately went out and bought a copy of 'Worn Copy,' and was a bit disappointed with it as a whole (although I loved 'Jules Lost His Jewels' and put it on every mixtape that year).

It can be a job sifting through his stuff, but when he's good he's great. An interesting fella. Appeals to my inner indie kid. I wouldn't like to be stuck in a lift with him, though.

The newer stuff is a bit more polished, as you might expect. Breakthrough smash 'Round & Round', obviously, and I love the truly, madly, creepy track 'Not Enough Violence' off 'Pom Pom'.

Still love the lo-fi twang of the bedroom, though:

Sorry @JohnnyGoodyear - I seem to be stretching the relevance of your thread here. It's always a great time for bedroom pop! Nobody needs permission to make art :)

  • I like that last one. Sounds like he’s been riding the barkfilter triple band a bit too hard though :D :D :D

  • @colonel_mustard thanks for the recommendations - I'll take a listen!

  • If you like Ariel Pink you might want to check out John Maus as well (not to be confused with the Walker brother...).

  • Oh and as a leftfield version of Ariel Pink there is the utterly unpredictable Dean Blunt (and his previous project Hype Williams, plus various other projects, mix tapes, albums only available on obscure Russian streaming sites...).

  • And thanks Johnny, it was indeed an interesting article.
