Dragonfly DAC owners please comment~ earbud microphone behavior?

Hello!

I am considering purchasing a Dragonfly DAC for use with my iPhone but before I did I wanted to ask a couple questions here

  1. I know that Dragonfly does not have a microphone input, what happens if you use headphones with a built in microphone such as Apple earbuds? Does the mic signal still reach the phone or is it cut off?

  2. If the earbud microphone audio does get cut off by the dragonfly, is it possible to record using the iPhone internal microphone into a DAW such as zenbeats or Cubasis when the dragonfly is connected?

If anyone else has any observations from using the dragonfly DACs I would love to hear them!

Thank you so much!!

  • A headset plugged in to the Dragonfly DAC will only pass audio out, so the mic won't work, however the iPhone built-in mics do still work so you can indeed record into a DAW with the Dragonfly connected.

I own both the Black and the Red versions, and they're both great. Personally think the Black is perfectly adequate and much better value. Both are able to drive my HD650s comfortably, and most importantly let me control the sample rates on my phone.

  • I’m about to buy the Dragonfly black, but it seems everyone plugs them direct into their phone. I’m trying to find out if they work plugged into a powered USB hub. The hub goes to my iphone se1 or 2? And I’ll be using AKG K44s. Thanks.

  • The Dragonfly definitely works when plugged in to a hub.

  • Thanks @richardyot for confirming.
