ToneBoosters vs FabFilter

From what I’ve heard, these are really the two powerhouses for mixing and mastering. If I already have all of the ToneBoosters stuff, is there any FabFilter plug-in that I should really get?

As much as I have been digging the new DDMF stereo comp, it is a compressor that definitely leaves a sonic imprint, it just doesn't control level.

To me FabFilter plugs are still the gold standard for most things mixing & mastering. ToneBoosters is great stuff don't get me wrong, but the visual feedback, ease of use, metering and sound of FabFilter plugs is where it's at.

The key in my view is to seperate the mix & master, always. Don't just slap Pro L2 on the master while you're mixing, etc.

For example: I'll use a great bus compressor like the DDMF or Pro C and make the mix as great as possible. I Export/bounce to stereo and then open a new session entirely to master. Subtle EQing into a limiter (FF or TB) keeping the levels at the LUFS standard. Export out and that's the song's final form.

    Which luffs standard?
    -14?
    -8?

  • I think with TB bundle you're well covered. Only one thing I miss from Fab bundle is Pro C. It's your everyday workhorse, when one need just leveling instead of mojo (i'm looking at you MDE). Same with multiband compression and gating, but I'm rarely use them.

  • Barricade is much simpler to use than Pro C for me personally, and you have simple level control all the way through to smashed destruction.

DDMF for the big mommas house fatness, and that ”use your ears” thing i like with it..
    And barricade as final destination

I thought Barricade is just a limiter, didn't know it has built-in compressor. Looks like TB bundle cover 99% of needs

    Mixing stage:
Everything (except for kick) → MagicDeathEyeStereo punch mode
    Kick → MagicDeathEyeStereo sidechain input

    Mastering stage:
    Barkfilter (light) → MagicDeathEyeStereo (4x oversampling) → 6144 → NoLimits → NoLimits (failsafe)

  • I’ve been using the FabFilter Pro-Q2 on my iPad but just realized it’s not iPhone supported so was just looking into the Tonebooster EQ...but one thing I really like and have used with great results is the Match EQ feature in FabFilter, before jumping in with Tonebooster, does it also have this capability to analyze and create a spectrum? Or if not, anyone know of another AU eq for iPhone with this capability?

Primary use case for the match eq feature is to analyze the spectrum of a higher quality microphone input then applying that curve to a piezo contact pickup input, and wow, really makes a HUGE difference

Just out of curiosity - what genre is that?

I make electronic music, but this setup should be great for any type of music.

Interesting ! Just a question: In the mastering phase, why are you using a compressor and an EQ in addition to Barkfilter (that is able to do multi bands compression) ?

There are support groups out there...... first step is to admit you have a problem....😂😂

    Input modeller (Saturation/Clip)
    Limiter
    Compressor
    Dither

It is probably my favourite straight dynamics on iOS/Desktop right now.

    No match EQ in TB.

  • NEVER!!!

I’m using BarkFilter as a 27 band “enhancer?” by compressing 27 bands individually at very low ratios and only where necessary.

Auto gain and Limiter are always switched off.

  • I don’t think there’s another multiband compressor like FabFilter Pro MB on iOS yet is there? And as mentioned the dedicated FF Gate and De-Esser plugins are decent.

Reelbus and Morphit, they don't have any equivalents in the FF lineup (well Saturn arguably for Reelbus, but it's not AUv3 yet and isn't exactly like-for like, and I prefer Reelbus)

I am doing -14 LUFS @jolico because it's usually the recommendation for all streaming services. Because they all use their scheme to volume match their catalog, I want to try to avoid their fingerprints as much as possible.

I’ve noticed that aiming for this actually leaves your song sounding significantly quieter on SoundCloud and on Spotify if you turn normalization off.

Honestly nowadays it seems to be a rather arbitrary number to shoot for.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I only switch from TB EQ to Pro-Q3 if I need some expansion on a particular band, but otherwise I use Toneboosters for everything.

The only FF I'm tempted by is Pro-MB

I'm surprised there aren't headphone-matching EQ presets floating around for Pro-Q3. I mean, surely it could do the job, but then who's going to set that up?

But yes, completely agree with @richardyot here. Reelbus is a very different creature to Saturn. The fabs don't offer a 'tape machine sim' as such, while Saturn can do amazing things with saturation and you can set up all of the modulations that your heart desires. Still very much hoping they'll port it over, and watch the Dan Worrall vids if you want to know why.

Reelbus is a good one, I guess would be my point.

  • Also, the Fabfilter full-screen UIs really are a joy to work with. I'll likely fall off the fence of my walled garden (Auria - they're all in there) and snatch up the AU bundle the next time they go on sale, simply because they're nicer to work with, subjectively, for me, and I'd value their company in NS2.

NS2 native effects are actually really good, but make sure you check with others to make sure your plugins are working well in NS2, it still doesn’t like a bunch.

  • Don't forget about TB Enchancer. It sounds somekind unique, pairs perfectly with ReelBus and cover 90% of saturation needs
