Is there any Europa sound I couldn't do with the above?

You would need to be able to enter the mind of a Preset Jockey. We buy apps and follow our bliss.
Some apps just frustrate you and don't encourage you to re-visit. (This is an app the @linearlineman might enjoy for example, but it's hard to predict his tastes).

Europa, Monotone and Rytmik were designed for the Preset Mindset. Lot's of "Packs" that demonstrate the work of Jacob Haq, Red Sky Lullaby and on and on... It's just keeps delivering rooms of wonder
without having to learn much. The GUI's tend to unveil additional great sounding synth aspects.

I get that fundmentally we're just re-buying similar sets of functionality but I'll "kick the dog".
I have yet to hear a Drambo Demo that sounds great. Lot's of capability but for the time invested
I have got very little bliss. There's bliss in there but it just sounds thin to me compared to Europa which
has a richness and accessibility only a handful of IOS Apps have.

I'll get bored and move on but it's this weeks hotness for me.

I'm probably ready to re-visit Gadget armed with what I have learned in the last 2 years.

It would be great if you could possibly make it work without Audiobus, Sam.

I have more apps that I can count, but Audiobus sadly isn't one of them — probably because it rarely if ever goes on sale..

True. But it's the only app that seems to support IAA well (out of all I've tested). Else, you'd have to open the app in standalone and make the loop. AUM seems to have removed all traces of MIDI IAA, unless @j_liljedahl might have a recommendation.

How do you mean AUM removed all traces of MIDI IAA?

I apologize, I spoke too soon. Still deep diving into AUM (recently got it last month, but only opened it a few times). When I open AUM, the only MIDI options I initially saw was Audio Unit MIDI Processor, and Audio Unit Extension. I did see the AUM MIDI routing (and it is absolutely gorgeous by the way) , and I now get how it works.

I believe what's going on with Reason Compact and AUM is that there are 4 IAAs. "Reason Compact" is the Audio IAA, but “Europa”, “Rhythmik”, and “Monotone“ are MIDI IAA. Currently, they are all classified as Audio IAAs in AUM. That's why when you try and route them, it seems to crash. Would it be possible to move those components as MIDI IAA in AUM?

aum shows you the multi ports but i don’t think it will actually load each one to control individually , like it ab3 , i’m not sure why or if i’m just doing it wrong

That's what I was explaining. It's not anything that you're doing. It's the way it's mapped out in AUM. Only Reason Compact should work. The other 3 are MIDI IAA. You shouldn't be able to connect to them that way.

In Audiobus 3, those 3 are MIDI OUT Inter app instruments. In AUM, they need to be at the routing window at the top with the squiggly lines.

    1. It sounds amazing? Again, I use Garageband as my main DAW and love it, even though some others see it more as Garbageband.
    2. It is the Europa engine from Reason on a PC. For free. The unlock shows the full synth.
    3. I love the UI. It's gorgeous, despite its finicky nature.
    4. It gives you a free Reason License.
  • If we could get about 1,000 people to buy this app they would give us additional stuff to buy.
Isn't that really how consumers controls the world? If you buy it won't they come back with more toys?

Anyway, Reason Studios is sitting on some amazing assets. We had access to Hannah but we didn't act as decent hosts so we have no Hannah and no toys.

But we do have smaller players that continue to mine our collective savings for chump change.

Ironically the other day I started thinking about reason compact again after seeing an email on the reason 11 for pro tools update. I fired it up and wow, the sound quality is beautiful. I ended up getting all the sound packs as well. The ui is also great. I would gladly pay more for additional modules and auv3 support. Reason has always been near and dear and it just seems logical the next step (aside from desktop vst they just did) is to bring it to the iPad, as close as possible or following this new interface. Those desktop modules scream for touch input.

I don't suppose we have anyone on this forum with connections to props we could hype it up to?

Anyone know of a road map for compact?

Can you imagine someone betting their career at Reason Studios pitching the opportunity $10 apps
on IOS present? How about a $10 that apple gets $3 off the top and it costs $2 per time to market and support? How many copies of a $5 app do you have to sell to get attention at the Cx0 level? It just doesn't scale to our benefit. If we'd line up for subscription services they would do the work because the revenue is on going and that adds up... which is why we're not interested (yet). If enough get behind it it could happen.

Anyone know of a road map for compact?

The CTO presented at a JUCE Developer's conference and made it clear that they had the technology to
expose the Reason Rack Exchange assets on IOS and potentially in a web browser without needing to change the 3rd party code. So, the assets are there but the market (that's us) isn't lining up to support
"rent a tool" to own or any of there current strategies to keep the money flowing.

Roland Cloud is probably going to happen first if they can keep the StageLight development team (now ZenBeats) intact or expand it to get the ports done.

The market doesn't hype an opportunity. The vender finds a need and fills it. But there's a negotiation over price that happens interactively. Reason Compact hasn't been a win-win. It's pretty good but we're spited by some amazing small developers that give more for less.

Good point. I tend to forget that 😉
If you re-visit Gadget, check out Propellerhead's best iOS software: Dr Octo Rex (Stockholm).
It's by far my most used gadget.

@Samflash3 Yep, good preset sounds are worth something.

I might be ready to check that out after what I've learned here. I actually owned Reason in the early 2000's but I never made anything with it but I also spent a small fortune on hardware in the same era.

I do tend to dislike propriety file formats if something else exists as an alternative but a few days checking
    it out maybe.

  • Nicely done

Hey McD, do you work for reason studios? I completely get it. From what Apple is doing today it seems they’ve completely missed the mark with what they intended with the iPad. In the beginning, to me anyways, the iPad was nothing more than a giant iPod touch. I feel the iPhone and iPad should’ve been two separate devices from the the onset.

Now, 10+ years later they’re finally coming around to what people really want to use the device for, and it’s not just sharing photos with grandma or watching Netflix. And all along they created this financial setup that seems to not benefit many great development companies and themselves either. On top of that it appears the hardware they’ve created is above and beyond the type of applications being built for it. It’s actually a little nuts to be honest.

If I were involved with a business like Reason Studios and had the ability to bring a full version of Reason to the iPad I’d do it but price it accordingly, as you see fit. Subscription or otherwise. I’d also strongly socialize the reasons for doing so. I get that there are devs who make amazing apps for less but in the end Reason has brand value. The thing I’m always concerned about with any app purchase is the same, will this be around in a year, will it be updated? Will the dev or dev team be around in a year or so? I see many apps just fall away into the void. And we all know there a shift coming to macOS. It’s not a question of if there will be an ARM Mac but when. That probably will be your best window of opportunity to move into begin supporting both iPad and the Mac and make a strong case. And who knows how that is going to play out anyway. Honestly I’m sick of turning on a Mac or Win pc to have an update ruin my creative spirit. I just upgraded my Mac to Catalina 10.5 and can’t even launch Ableton anymore (and too tired to even right now to care to resolve). Reason, of course, works fine. Reason has had hiccups over the years but I’ve always considered it the gold standard for rock solid software development. The update during the 10 year that fixed DSP issues was amazing.

I’ve been observing people complaining left and right about Cubasis 3’s pricing. Not offering an upgrade over charging a full amount again. I never took issue with this. At the moment Cubasis is a close as you can get to a desktop DAW experience on the iPad. (Yes there’s BeatMaker - I don’t just want an MPC focused UI and Auria Pro but the UI is beyond horrible - can’t deal with that no matter if it offers side chaining). And Apple hasn’t given anyone the means to do such a thing anyway and as someone who understands software development life cycles I don’t blame Cubase for charging what they do. They’ve been telling people, it’s a complete re-write of the code base! The app is worth double the cost seeing what you can achieve with it on this OS.

I’ll quit ranting. In the end I get it and I wish things were different but running a business you have to be able to justify the means to an end. Right now Apple seems lost but I’m hoping they get their shit together because the iPad really is the most creative platform to make music on. Problem is the precedent they’ve helped set. The only way I see reversing it is for a desktop dev to take an economic stand. And I am beginning to see it. FabFilter comes to mind. And like I said, Reason’s racks scream for touch input.

  • Yeah... Apple has lost it's way:

    $260.2 billion in revenues
iPad accounts for less than 10% of its total revenue - ~$25B?
Apple's iPhone business generated $142.4 billion in revenue last year

Reason Studios - from the Reason User Forum:

I fear that Reason Compact is pretty much as far along as Reason Studios will take it at this point. We've heard not a peep from the Product Manager that ran the project (Hanna Åstrand) since the last major update, and it's approaching a year now since 2.0. And since Reason Compact really only appeals to Reasoners who work inside Reason DAW, and their focus seems to be on Reason Rack Plugin for now, I just can't see them reviving Reason Compact development anytime soon, or ever for that matter.

    >

Making money from Software has been harder and harder.
Making money from Hardware is also challenging.

Talking about how to do both is easy and very low risk.

No, I think you're misunderstanding what roles the IAA apps vs hosts have. Those IAA ports are classified as Instrument (Audio) by the IAA app, in this case Reason Compact. AUM just retrieves a list of all published IAA ports from the system. There is never anything special any host should need to do to supports specific IAA apps, it's all governed by standards and as far as both parts follow them it should work as expected.

When you say "crash", does AUM actually crash? As in vanishes from the screen and returns to homescreen, or do you mean something else?

One weird thing I notice here is that the Reason Compact multi-port item has no title. This might be the problem here, and it means I need to tweak AUMs algorithm to detect the common part of the titles of a multi-port IAA app, or rather do something clever when there is no common part (as seems to be the case here).

Oh, it doesn't actually crash (like stops working). Reason Compact still works, but the app that gets loaded stops working. So if you load Europa, it circles but never loads. The only one that does successfully loads is Reason Compact.

Thanks for the response. This is one of the few threads I'm following in hopes that it fully works in AUM.

  • I like it. Nice sound choices and you kept it very minimal which is hard to do for me.
Especially liked the low riff, a real ear worm :)

  • Unfortunately Reason Compact doesn't work with Audiobus anymore (at least on my Ipad Air (latest gen) ... any idea on how to solve this problem?
