The US Federal CARES act may dramatically help you!
I’m a retired self-employed musician. Until the pandemic occurred, my only income was what I got from my piano gigs. A friend called me today to update me on how I could be eligible for unemployment. And being eligible for unemployment caused by COVID shutdowns (ALL of my piano gigs have been cancelled as of March 1st of this year) means that the US CARES ACT will supplement that by $600 MORE per week.
If you’re in a situation similar to mine, check with your state unemployment agency. A little paperwork to file is definitely worth it!

I hope it works out for you. Terrible time for many self-employed folks in the "gig" economy.
I finally went fully into doing live sound and music as my only occupation on 12/28/19. I was doing that all along but was also a full time licensed clinical social worker. I picked a good time to make the leap, huh? 😂 Still, it was time to move on from that part of my life and I’m happy.
I’ve been waiting on unemployment for 6 weeks now (I’m in NJ), my friends who have gotten it said it took them about 8 weeks to hear back, but then they got back pay and the cares act funding back to that date too. I’m hoping that will happen. Been ok so far but having no gigs can’t be a long term plan...
I just spent today assisting a friend who is a Broadway musician with a project, it’s looking like Broadway shows aren't coming back until at least 2021. Still, we have to be careful not to jump back into things too soon or else these past few months will have been for nothing if infections come roaring back. NYC is eerily quiet right now, although I was in town tonight for the 7:00 cheering, which is pretty cool to witness
In addition to PUA (the extension of unemployment benefits for self-employed, contract, and gig workers), also check out the federal Small Business Administration. They have a bunch of pandemic programs for self-employed folks. Basically loans that don't have to be paid back.
All these things have so much paperwork and hoops to jump that it can get very frustrating. You have to stay dedicated, focused, and see it through. My current philosophy is: get as much as you can and don't let the connected, fat cats grab all the money on the table.
Good advice for sure. My wife is a hair stylist and I’m a health care provider.
She’s been out of work for 2 months and me for 5 weeks and I was just informed that my furlough has been extended until mid August.
My wife can resume work tomorrow and still has not received a check though we’re confident that it will come based on other’s experiences in similar situations.
It’s not ideal but we can eat and pay bills. Like @coolie said hang in there and try to be patient.
I believe we’re going to come out of this on the other side intact (and reasonably sane) hopefully.😉
Oh and we’re in Illinois. An hour from Chicago. Our Governor has taken a very cautious approach to “reopening.”
