Song Of The Month Club - June 2020

  • Been pretty busy, haven’t been able to do much and likely won’t finish anything else by end of the month. So here’s a beat I finished. It was mixed by someone on Reddit who wanted mixing practice.

  • @DukeWonder Thanks for the kind words :) I'm waiting to see what Monday brings, though not holding breath. I REALLY like the parts where you suddenly dropped out the 808, real good attention grabber (first at 1:30, another at 2:19). The mix is good to me! Tell your dude they did a good job!

  • I haven't contributed much here for years, but have recently rediscovered Gadget. @JohnnyGoodyear encourage me to share, so blame him. Here's a sketch. Love the variety of stuff you guys are coming up with.

    Interesting mashup of 80s sounding synthesizer melodies with modern trap-style beats and bass. It's a nice sketch, I particularly like the changes of mood that it goes through. I think the beat works well but the bass does feel a bit out of place against the more melodic synths.

    NIce! The bass gets a bit muddy at times, and something trebly for variation would have lifted it. Good song.

    This kind of collage approach to music fascinates me - it sounds coherent here. Really like it.

    particularly like the glitchy percussion that comes in at the one minute mark. And the vocal lifts it. Maybe it's just me, but I hear optimism in this, like it's a springboard, and we're waiting for the jump. Great atmosphere.

    Another gadget fan! Great energy and punchy drums. Love the offbeat octave stabs.

    Off-kilter, sinister and strange. threatening, even. In a good way ;)

    1983/84 - that's how specific this sounded to me. Such a strong eighties vibe. Just need Phil Oakey to warble over it.

    that kick is great - really cuts through. Might be a tad loud in the mix though. Great contrast with the swirly flitered synthy goodness.

    Thank you. After listening more closely to songs I like, I noticed there are fairly frequent cuts made to various instruments to build and slow the flow. Yeah he did a good job. I think it’s cleaner than I would have gotten.

    Nice - how did you manage to get Bootsy Collins in to play the bass?

    It's a really nice slice of old-school funk (not really G-Funk so it can't be Bootsy), it sounds a lot like some of my old records. The bass line is great, and I like the horns as well. How did you do those horns in Gadget BTW? Is there something useable in Glasgow for those kind of horn stabs?

    The drum groove is also very nicely varied while still being funky. Good job. 👍

    Cheers! Glasgow and Darwin for brass. Gadget is great for basic bass basically.

    Hey all, I just found this thread as I was considering posting something publicly for the first time. Seems like the right place :) But first here’s my feedback for what’s been shared so far this month, in reverse order. I’m not so good at picking out specific elements that could be improved on, which I feel is the best kind of feedback, but here’s a go...thanks for sharing all!

    @iansainsbury
    Always got a place in my day for a good funky groove! I have to say actually there’s something about the horns which first come in at 0:37 that is a bit off to me, not the melodies but the instrument/patch (or gadget or whatever...never used Gadget!) itself, not sure exactly what it is though so probably not the most useful feedback...like a little thin/flat/digital sounding...but I do dig the melody and as the track progresses I didn’t notice it anymore, so maybe just the way they come in. (I just read the exchange between you and richardyot about the quality of the brass instruments in Gadget! Ha, different opinions i guess!)

    The subtle phasing coming in at 1:27 is a nice underlying touch, cool use of it as it continues.

    I really like the way you pan the horns around as you start to end the track around 2:00 mark, something I almost never take the time to play with in my own stuff. Happy track with a really nice way of winding down some elements at the end to finish off with a sudden drop!

    @DukeWonder
    Nice steady pleasing to the ears vibe throughout with some well placed cutting in and out of instruments and beat as you said you realized you like in other songs. I did feel at times though the dropping out of certain elements to be a bit too sudden or cutoff or something but mostly works well and I often feel that way when I try to add and remove elements in my own stuff, so I could just be projecting here! I really like the 1:20 mark where you bring the arpeggiations back in, nice melodic power move.

    @FunkMachine
    Cool groove. Nice soothing melodies with the bells. Right when I was starting to think it could use a bit more variety there started to be some really nice breaks in the 2 minute section. I always like those kinds of not too heavy drops. Really like the little 16th note bass “echo”

    @Kitusai
    I love these kinds of obscure rhythmic sounds, especially the second section after the break at 2:45ish... Really feels to me like two separate tracks with the main thing connecting them being the poets beautifully deep raspy voice, but it works well, somehow while the two sections are quite different there’s a common enough feeling to make it coherent. Some of the notebending I find a little too much but overall adds a nice eerie element. Dig it.

    @spyrogaia
    Really like the arpeggiation, especially as it grows after 40 sec mark. Really dig the little section leading into the break right before 1.34, really nice arrangement there, and I like how you brought it back in with that chuggin along bassline. As the 6th track on your “Voyage through Space” concept album this seems like the time for casual cruising through the cosmos has ended and shit’s gettin real!

    @iammane
    The subtle changes in what’s going on percussively here is really cool, lot in there actually. And just while I was thinking that, the change at 1:04 kicked in and brought a smile of creative appreciation, unexpected interesting sounds there. Very cool. The vocals fit in really well, only thing I guess I’d say is I’d enjoy more of ‘em! Overall nice arrangement keeping things steadily progressing while giving enough time and space to each section to get into the groove.

    Really dig this style. Reflective moody vibe definitely with the feeling you expressed about the world. But that’s what art and music is all about no? An outlet to express what can be too much for words and capture the essence of a transitory moment. I’ve always felt it’s the thing that can make all the shit worth it somehow...but I’m definitely among the ones lucky enough to think that without being touched too much from all the chaos. Keep it up, really nice.

    @DavidEnglish
    Nice groovin trip hoppin beat, I always can get into that kinda feel, done well here. I really like the simple melody line that comes in at 0:45, fits the midday shuffle title well. The break/change at 2:13 felt a little flat or sudden to me in the way the main melody dropped out, but at the same time I can say it fits in with the way the track shifts around with the head nodding beat.
    Really like the ending/outro with the use of little micro breaks of silence. Cool groovin track overall.

    @richardyot
    To be honest I’ve never been too into this kinda style so much so I don’t know how useful my feedback is but I do find it to be some nice songwriting and the chorus did find it’s way into my head to resurface at other points throughout the day when I first listened to it, in a good way! I think some variations in the straight ahead drums that continue throughout the track would go a long ways, but that is the style so like I said my feedback might not be too useful here. Thanks for sharing and getting this goin!

    You need to use a service like SoundCloud or Dropbox, Youtube etc... SoundCloud works well because the forum will automatically embed the song into your post.

    Ok I made a SoundCloud account so hopefully this works...
    Everything here is done by playing or “drumming” on an instrument I play typically called a Mohan Veena, though I prefer to just call it an Indian slide guitar, or Guitar Veena. Basically a version of the ancient Indian instrument the Vichitra Veena but built on the body of a modern guitar. Typically used for playing Indian ragas you could say it’s kind of like a sliding sitar. I’ve made a few modifications to the bridge adding a jiwari for the lower strings which gives it more of that droning Indian twang. And then of course there’s a ton of fx plugins flying around 😜 Getting close to being able to do most of this live which is the goal...

  • @richardyot
    I like how the minimal guitar-based opening becomes something quite different with the addition of an almost indescribable sound. The sound is industrial/mechanical, while still being musical. The rest of the song progresses well with a good mix of voice and instrumentation.

    @iammane
    Nice guitar with a heartbeat-like thumping behind it. Satisfying buildup with the voice as backed with symphonic-like instruments. The whole thing works quite well.

    @spyrogaia
    I really like the smooth transition from the 80s-type electronics sounds to a more beat-driven piece. The quieter part makes a good counterpoint to the previous section. Overall, it’s an excellent combination of sounds and beats, augmented with successful transitions and change-ups.

    @Kitusai
    The growling, twangy instruments combined with the intermittent sweeps of sounds is a great complement to the spoken words. The music is wonderfully drone-like in places. The second main section (it’s more electronic and aggressive) meshes equally well with the spoken words.

    @FunkMachine
    A catchy song with an infectious beat. I especially like the 80s-style retro synth sounds. A well-crafted blast from the past.

    @DukeWonder
    This one has a bright and open synth beat. I especially like the pad-like sounds that counterbalance the melodic-beat sections. It’s a song that grows on you as it moves along.

    @iansainsbury
    A nice funky beat. The brass section works particularly well on this one. Same for the wa-wa synth melody. It all gels together to make a terrific song that seems both familiar and new at the same time.

    Interesting and pretty original sound. It’s got the obvious Indian influence but it’s also a little bluesy at times. Are you playing the percussion at the same time as the Veena Guitar? If so that’s super impressive.

    The jam is totally solid, but it’s probably a little long IMO, I would shorten it to 4 or 5 minutes and tighten up the musical themes. It does flow nicely though.

  • @ManWhoWouldBeStrings and @DavidEnglish

    I appreciate it. I actually wasn’t really super stoked about this one so I’m glad that you appreciate it. Tells me I was probably being a bit too critical of my own stuff.

    Great atmosphere here, and something completely different. I think it would benefit from being emptier at the start so that it can build more dramatically. When everything's happening (after the 6min mark), the effects can sometimes seem too much (although the percussion cuts through nicely). To my ears, the mix is too middly - I'm missing a good distinct bass, and it gets a bit harsh. Really refreshing and interesting, would like to hear more :)

    Thanks for the listen. When trying to do this live some is done while playing (like the clicking echo’y part at the beginning) but most the percussion is recorded quickly in segments where no new melody is being played by looping a dry signal of small bits into LoopyHD which I setup to send those individual loop-tracks through various plugins (particularly UltraTap and Turnado) which I control and change with some Mozaic script magic for variations, in addition to just muting and unmuting them. And yeah, after years of learning Indian classical music where a 20 minute rendition of a raga is considered quite short, in addition to generally being long winded in my way of expression things...it’s hard for me to do anything in less than 10 minutes!

    @iansainsbury
    Thanks. I agree with the too middly harshness thing. I struggled a ton with trying to tone that down, still quite new to mastering these kinds of things. Appreciate the feedback! Hoping to get more out soon...

  • @richardyot charming pop melody and atmosphere with an astonishing « regularity ». I find the sound a little bit muddy. Very nice though with your unique style-signature..

    @DavidEnglish very cool mood.

    @iammane Excellent melody, sounds, atmosphere. Very good work on sounds. Try to continue for our pleasure!

    @spyrogaia I don’t like this kind of music but it is very well done with a clear and punchy sound! I’m surprised how you well produced that with just Gadget! Bravo!

    @FunkMachine I agree with richardyot about the 80’ sounding which not a default! Not my cup of tea but very well done.

    @DukeWonder Not my cup of tea either but cutting out sounds, very professional, excellent mixing thanks to the Reddit’s guy if I understand well. The bass is sustaining the whole with a lot of punch.

    @iansainsbury excellent funky tune from begin to ending! I agree with the love of variety of stuff we find here. And about your music: please get in more often!

    @ManWhoWouldBeStrings Yes! You enhance what iansainsbury says about the variety we find here! Very original. Maybe a little bit too much reverb? Please publish a photo of your instrument!

    @Everybody: thanks for feedback!

    @iammane For the kitchen making of it is a mess to find back my files sorry (I failed to find them back). But I mainly improvised with Doc Sticko with Reaktor Form sounds I cooked as far as I remind.

  • @Kitusai thanks for the feedback! Are you submitting a track this month?

  • @richardyot Which month? We are still in June here :)
