MacBook Pro Keyboard Service Program?
I just bought a used 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch,Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. It has the dreaded butterfly keyboard and although it seems to be functional so far, from what I've read it is prone to failure, and at least for some, its short throw can be annoying. Any-who Apple has a free Keyboard Service Program to replace the keyboard, see here https://support.apple.com/en-ca/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks and my laptop is included in this program. From what I can tell, I would get the latest, greatest butterfly keyboard, which may be more immune to dirt etc. than the one in my laptop.
The problem now is that although the Apple Store has accepted my claim to have the keyboard replaced, and I made a booking to do so, I watched a video on the process, see here and it's apparent that it's not a simple, easy task, and that the Apple Store could screw things up, and/or not reassemble things properly, and cause problems later on.
Has anyone had their butterfly keyboard replaced by the Apple Store, and/or have experience with their Mac being repaired by the Apple Store, so that I would be able to assess how likely the keyboard replacement will be a problem free process?
The program covers my MacBook Pro for 4 years after the first retail sale of the unit so I'll need to decide shortly.
Much Obliged!

Well, if they screw it up I would imagine they would need to provide you with a new laptop. I bet they won’t screw it up though.
I’ve dealt with Apple with a couple repairs and they’ve always done a good job. My wife’s MacBook had a faulty keyboard that they replaced. Worked perfectly until our daughter decided it needed orange juice after Apple care expired. Recently they replaced an expanding battery in my 2015 MBP free of charge. This happened right when Covid kicked off and I still got it back within a week and a half. Low charge cycles definitely helps the resale value so I’m happy with Apples service.
I had my butterfly keyboards replaced about every 4 months on two of my laptops, which is why I bailed as soon as Apple came out with the MBP 16" with the desperately-needed keyboard update. They replace the entire top case--a very expensive repair--for free, and sure, they did a good job (repeatedly), but I had endless grief and downtime over a 3-year period.
It would be news to me if the new top cases can be installed on the older model MacBooks; I highly doubt it. Apple will just replace it with a new one of the same model, which will continue to be as likely to fail as any other.
When the 4 years are up, you're looking at $400 per occurrence--the butterfly keyboard: the gift that keeps on giving. I took a big loss trading in my butterfly laptops before their time, but it's been a good riddance. Head for the exits, now.
I did the replacement 6 months ago on my MacBook Pro 15 (2016) and all went well, the new keyboard is way better and I got also a new battery for free.
Always had a good experience with Apple repairs, even had a couple keyboards done with no issues. Definitely happy with my 16" as well so I don't have deal with that again. Hopefully. 😎
Thanks guys, I bought it used in perfect condition for a good price, and I plan to mostly use it with my Logitech Bluetooth keyboard.
I've heard the butterfly keyboard problem is exacerbated by cookie crumbs and the like. I figure I should get the keyboard replaced as a safety measure, and I may well get a new battery etc. out of the deal. I will now throw the dice and gamble on this, in my favour I expect!
In all events, I consider computers to be about the equivalent of software: five years worth of use and inconsequential resale value. As an aside I've got four PC laptops in various states of repair for various reasons, and the longer I wait to repair them, the less reason there is to bother. Don't get me started on the number of tube amps I have in need of some repair or the number of guitars in need of attention.
Hey, it's the price you pay to play, so they say!
