Self-discipline re finishing and refining
I’ve recently discovered a style of music that is original and authentic to me: combining jazz harmony with Indian raga singing. I think it sounds pretty good, and very few people are exploring this:
The thing is, both traditions are highly improvisational. I made this track in less than twenty minutes or so of improvising. Jamming out a sketch like this is easy. Nothing is pre-composed or arranged.
I’d like to make an album in this style, but it seems like a huge task. Instead of singing into the iPad mic, I have to learn about real mics, and interfaces. I have to learn a daw in depth, and spend a lot of time arranging and composing in it.
All of that seems antithetical to the improvisational nature of the music. It’s not that I lack self-discipline. It’s more a challenge of figuring out how to apply discipline to something so inherently extemporaneous.
Any input on how to reconcile this would be much appreciated. I know @LinearLineman has pulled it off recently, and some of you guys are real production geniuses.

There are apps to replace mic's and interfaces can be virtualized and discipline is frowned upon here.
But you still need to list every app you used so we can be sure we have the right tools to rip you off and exploit this new genre too. Please dish on the details.
If that's your vocal then you have commercial potential making sample libraries for this genre too... maybe make some IAP's for Noise that only work with Roli hardware for controllers. A small but lucrative market: "World Raga-time".
Nice track by the way.
Sounds nice!I think if you get the aesthetic right, you can maybe get away without fancy equipment. You just have to make it sound like your limitations were actually a conscious choice, many people have done this very successfully through the years.
Don’t reconcile anything! Just do more of this just as you are doing it. And listen to some Krishna Das.
As you do more you will feel it more clearly. No need to worry about it at this point, IMO. If it seems like a gift, it is.
The other thing you can do is find a producer who likes your stuff and is on a similar wavelength sonically, and get them to provide the tech and the knowhow that you currently may not have the time or interest to learn.
There’s no secret sauce other than Harmonizr. You send it midi, and it harmonizes whatever you sing into it. The midi notes you send in tell it which pitches to shift your voice to. The rest of the sound is the popular fx apps: Blackhole and Eos reverb, Bleass delay, some Crystal reverse delay. But Harmonizr is the star of the show here.
Awesome. Thank you for the app details. I have all you listed except Crystal. I tried a Harmonizr experiment and it's definitely magical. I'll re-listen to see if I can hear the contributions of all those
reverbs and delays mixed with the Harmonizr choir.
When you find a rabbit hole, you've just got to fall into it and follow it all the way. Your natural curiosity and inquisitiveness will show you the way. We can't really help you as it's your journey - but it's great to see something truly original emerging. Keep going.
You don't really need any gear, but I guess you could invest in a USB or Lightning microphone (much more convenient than an interface + condenser mic). There's some nice ones around by the likes of Apogee, Shure, or Rode.
After Harmonizr, the fx don't really matter. I use different combinations every time and still get more or less the same sound.
Another good one to experiment with is CuSnP which is free. This adds a magical tunable drone pad to everything you sing or play through it.
Well, if you want to learn about mics and interfaces there’s a lot there, but it doesn’t have to be a creativity killer. Just get something that works and have it ready to go. I don’t know if it works on iOS, but audient made an interface recently that sets the recording level for you. As for mics, tons of choices, but a few months ago I got a heil pr40 for $200 used and I’ve yet to find anything it hasn’t worked well on.
I don’t know where you are located, but if you (or anyone) wants mics that sound awesome and don’t cost a lot, iskproaudio.com is your friend. That’s the North American distributor, but I know there is a distributor for Australia and one for England as well. The ICDM is an incredible handheld dynamic mic and if you google “isk ICDM promo” you’ll find the hidden webpage where you can get 2 of them for $50. I have 8 for live sound and they are great. I have 4 of their small diaphragm condensers, as well as their tube mic and a discontinued large diaphragm condenser. Those were both apprehended by my songwriting partners though...I don’t think I’m getting them back.
One other cool mic that isn’t expensive and sounds great is the neat microphones king bee and worker bee. Neat was a partnership between the original designers of blue microphones and Gibson, but they seem to have fallen by the wayside. A lot of people avoid them because of the way they look, but that is a big mistake, they are great mics. I “borrowed” the king bee from my songwriting partners in exchange for the tube mic...they may never get that back! 😂 I have 2 of the worker bee as well- amazing on vocals, acoustic guitar, and guitar amps. I use them as overheads sometimes too.
Hope that helped...
