Poll: Sound Design Challenge - The Rebirth

@david_2017 remarked in another thread that we used to have monthly sound design challenges. I miss those, even though I didn’t come up with very momentous creations. It was always a nice excuse to concentrate on one synth for a while.

Since we are midway through 2020, why not take a synth that came out this year? So without further ado, here’s the poll, I’ll keep it open until Tuesday June 23rd eob and of course, if I missed an app or you’d prefer another one, throw rotten eggs or mention it in the comments.

  • I vote for Mela although it will be a pita to manage all the patches as It's import & export patches one-by-one.

You can drag and drop multiple patches at once from the Files app in slide over view.

  • Yeah, that works for import but export is still one-by-one right?

    Ah maybe. Didn’t test that

  • I don’t have any of those.
    But, I do have DRAMBO!!!

Can I just recreate those synths in Drambo, and build my presets in there?
    Or will that disqualify me?
    😜

(Goto files, select, mark all, drag and drop into Mela and boom there are your patches)

Its wondeful! Such a bliss this import export process!!!

By the way @Philandering_Bastard, cool call. And a wonderful selection. Would love to have a sound design challenge revival :)

Thanks! What would be a good time frame for the challenge? It used to be a month but I think that was partly for the snappy title ‘Sound Design Challenge of (insert month here)’.

Would two weeks perhaps be better?

What about synth based instead of time based? So if the challenge is always opened?

  • Good call, may be a 14 days challenge is more like... entertaining and changing?!

Life is busy and stuff but a real challenge could also be something like a weekend. Although not all too many guys and gals would be able to participate in it. Maybe 14 days is a good solution then

What about focusing on a certain sound rather than a certain app?
Isn't that what sound design is all about?

  • I’ve just obtained Mela after being encouraged to investigate it. I think it has a nice sound and a lot of potential to explore with the routing options and mod matrix. So I’d be interested to see what people come up with for this new one.

oki im voting for continua then... So how do we do this, just make a bank and share here?

    Listen to this man 👍🏼😆 👌🏼😂 👊🏼😅

After that, Continua, Alpha and FRMS are good choices too.

  • Is there a compelling reason to buy Mela when you have a shedful of virtual analogue synths already? Other than lack of willpower..

  • well its..red?

Hmm, got a few red things knocking about..

  • edited June 2020

The ability for it to act as a music effect plugin is a somewhat unique feature most other synths lack. So you can actually route external instruments through the synth engine itself, use its 2x state variable filters in several configs, looping envelopes and multi effects. As a synth.. I personally don't think it's anything to write home about, but as an effect I think its great. Especially good for mixing and matching with the other music effect synths on IOS.

edit: the dev is highly responsive too. The updates this synth has gotten are significant to say the least. Apps with devs like this are almost always great purchases, imo.

  • It’s a tough choice as I’ve recently obtained FRMS too and I’m sure people would come up with amazing things on that one, and I’d already started work on some patches for Alpha too with Fruitbat and ReasOne. But it would be nice to support Niko’s work and expand on Mela’s sound palette. There’s quite a lot going on inside Mela.

Well, going by past practice once the poll is closed, people post their creations to the thread and the idiot who volunteered (me) collates the bunch. I’m inclined to shorten the time frame to two weeks but that’s of course very much open to discussion.

  • Thank man for doing this,...! 14 days is cool. I would say lets try with that.
    When is the poll closed?

Did anyone check if sharing presets in FRMS and Continua is as easy as MELA? Its a joy to import presets in Mela though haha

man please share some spider mela sounds!

i love mela but voted for alpha as i’m more familiar with it, but totally down for mela as well as a challenge will push me to learn it... the developer is really cool dude and has really made it a great synth with all the updates since release

  • I'm in 'square wave mode' at the moment passing them thru a serial filter configuration (static high-pass filter at 200hz followed by low-pass filter with a bit of resonance). Ie. most things sound like old cheesy home keyboards...

Another synth that could be on the list is Lagrange by IceGear, a very easy to tweak synth with great potential :)

Polls are open until Tuesday, eob. I initially thought Mela would run away but FRMS is gaining ground...

I thought Synths of 2020 would be a nice hook but Langrange is definitely worth a deep dive.

  • Shockwave should totally be in this list too.

Shockwave came out in December 2019. But you’re right, it is an excellent candidate for the next instalment.

It’s growing and being maintained. Recently got phase modulation (from his NPD synth) and really easy to get into.

I don’t know in terms of sound. I need more time.
