Stuck with only 4 apps?
sorry if you guys get this question a lot, im fairly new so im not sure how often questions like this get asked.
but say you could only keep 4 apps on your device for the rest of your life.
you get to keep:
1 daw/daw-like app
1 synth or other sound generator app
1 effect app
1 midi sequencer (optional)
what would they be? and why?
for the sake of the argument, you can also have audiobus if you need it.
here’s mine:
daw: aum
its probably the “daw” that makes me feel the most creative. i love jamming and making loops in it, however it’s hard for me to finish anything with it. i know thats not reaaaally what its for. but i just have a lot of fun with it.
synth: mirack
very very versatile and really fits my mood to make some weird glitchy tracks with. but im also always learning new things about it and trying different stuff. it wont ever get stale for me since there’s so many possibilities with it. not to mention it can pretty much be used in any of the other categories too.
effect app: looperator
i love transforming my melodies and drum loops into something completely different, and looperator is very good at that. i’ve mostly just played with the presets, but you can get really creative if you actually dive into it (which im just now starting to do)
sequencer: atom
it was between this and fugue machine. i LOVE fugue machine, but i just feel like atom has a bit more flexibility with recording midi, time signatures, quantization, layering other instances of atom in the background. plus it can basically do the same thing fugue can do, you’d just need to do a little more work to get there
im curious to know some other answers! like i said, im still pretty new to ios music making, so these will help me (and im sure a few others) add some quality apps to their wishlist.

Welcome to the forum. We love these kinds of threads. 4 is a new low. Gonna be tough.
1) AUM: everything is done in AUM.
2) BeatHawk: With IAPs has some of the best and realistic sounding instruments and loops.
3) TB Reverb: Very versatile, universal. Cannot best the shimmer.
4) Xequence 2: no nonsense MIDI, very well implemented. Plus some great support from the dev who is active on here.
beathawk was one of the first apps i got on my ipad actually! i couldnt really wrap ny head around it though so it’s kinda just sitting in a folder right now. i’ll have to give it another shot though. what’s your fav IAP?
ive also heard a lot of xequence. its not auv3, right? because that kinda turned me off of trying it out. but if it goes on sale i’ll def give it a shot.
edit: also thanks for the welcoming! ive kinda been spending more time on here than i have twitter recently. which is wild because i was on twitter ALL the time. it’s a nice community here, i like it a lot.
@itsaghost the choirs are amazing. Honestly a lot of the acoustic instruments. One of my favorite packs is the Spanish Gypsy for the Nylon String guitar. I mainly use it as a sound module but you can do a lot with it.
You won’t need Xequence to be AUv3. It will be separate from AUM, but if you search on here you will find a Xequence + AUM + Audiobus thread that has a lot of great workflow tips and tricks. It is a powerful sequencer that can drive anything you need, with AUM as your sound module host essentially. Many use this workflow as their “daw”-less daw.
You may find this forum is much better for your soul and much worse for your wallet than Twitter.
No sense in squandering precious resources in this fantasy scenario 🤪
its already hit my wallet pretty hard honestly. all the excitement from the apps ive been eyeing since before i got my ipad. its well worth it though. im having a lot of fun. and i’ll definitely check out some of the xequence threads! ive heard its pretty powerful. i was trying to not break my “only auv3 apps“ rule, but patterning 2 was on sale... and it ended up working a lot better as an IAA than i expected so i’m gunna branch out and try some other stuff thats not auv3. xequence is up on my list for sure. thank you!
it was only a matter of time lmaaao. but yeah drambo is pretty powerful. i’m trying to use it more and its been pretty fun! definitely not at the point where i can use it for everything though
1 daw/daw-like app
1 synth or other sound generator app
1 effect app
1 midi sequencer (optional)
1) Nanostudio 2
2) Beathawk
3) BarkFilter
4) MagicDeathEyeStereo (since I don't use a standalone MIDI sequencer, lol)
AUM as the main workspace.
Toooooo hard to choose just one synth, one of the mpe ones, maybe DRC.
If only one fx, Moebius Lab, cos it does so much.
A generative midi sequencer of some kind, hmmm.... maybe Polyphase, maybe Cykle.
a lot of people mentioned barkfilter in the aum master bus chain thread, i’ll definitely have to look into more! and magicdeatheye has such a big price tag which is keeping me from even watching demos of it lol. but ive also heard great things about it. maybe when im rich
Id have to say Aum. Drambo. Tube AU. Audioshare but if its with aum then scatterbrain.
auditor is popular in this forum. what do you like about it? i got hokusai 2 (mostly for chopping up and saving individual pieces of audio for drum kits) but im curious about what auditor has that people are drawn towards
drc is up there with my favorite synths as well. it has such a warm and analog sound to it. do you have any of the preset IAP? if so, is there one you recommend getting first? or do you mostly make your own sounds?
i got the synth engine already, i just never have any ideas on what to make. i understand the basics, i kind of know what i want, i’m just not sure how to get there.
Might be cheating but:
AUM
ZEEON
DRAMBO
BM3
That would be my answer too. If I’m playing by the rules I’d say Drambo, AUM, Zenbeats and Blackhole.
I only got it recently! It being mpe and versatile was the main factor in choosing it. I'm already feeling like I've betrayed some even more beloved but less versatile synths though, like Shockwave for example.
Haven't made sounds from scratch in it yet, just tweaking.
By the way, there is a bug in DRC currently where you may need to toggle mpe on/off to get it working. They are working on a fix though...
aum
mirack
drambo
fac alteza
and since i have two ipads lol on my second
aum
bleass alpha
spectrum
touchscaper
and on my iphone
aum
spacecraft
poly 2
ripplemaker
😎😎😎😎😎
I'm sorely tempted by Touchscaper and Poly 2, I must say....
shockwave is definitely on my list to get eventually. ive got a LONG wishlist.
drc is a good synth! i havent had any problems with it so far! everything’s been i. working order. switching presets is a little slow, but not too bad.
i just opened the standalone version and some drum sounds were playing with the keys of drc though. turns out drc was triggering eg pulse in the background LOL.
imaginando makes great apps though. i got frms on sale about a week ago and it’s another fun granular synth. and their delays are also 👌
this setup generates infinite Autechre/qebrus-like albums 😎🤓🥳
Aum- Fractal Bits- Turnado- Ruismaker Noir
they are pretty great, poly 2 is one of my all time favs, great for sequencing and is almost a patterning 2 like sequencer replacement available as an auv3 😎 but also just using it to play internal samples is great with the multi out
sneaky sneaky... but some good choices for sure
touchscaper is really fun. im excited for where it’s going to go in the future!
i might get the paid version of poly 2. i had some fun playing with it in standalone but being able to use it to control midi sounds very very cool
fractal bits being run through any of the multi effect apps by sugar bytes is wonderful.
also i didnt know you could use ruismaker noir as a midi sequencer??? wild
I love these kind of threads!
1) Aum would have to be the DAW.
2) miRack would be my ‘Synth’ / drum machine of choice
3) Drambo would be the fx app.
4) SunVox will be the sequencer, when it finally gets AU midi out.
Fortunately, 2-4 can all take over each other’s roles for maximum utility
To make finished tracks, I think there’d need to be a few more allowances for mastering fx like eq’s and comps though too. However if you chose the right daw for #1 you’d be set with some nice fab filter IAP’s.
You asked about "apps for life" but I admit, my list could change tomorrow, ya never know! 😅
KORG Gadget plus Stockholm
Drambo
Thafknar. All other FX built with Drambo.
Nanostudio 2, the MIDI sequencer alone is the best I've found next to Genome MIDI.
It would be the host for Drambo and Thafknar too.
If I may add an audio editor, it would be TwistedWave+Brusfri today (maybe Auditor tomorrow).
If I may add a sampler for natural instruments, it would be AudioLayer.
Oof.
Koala
Samplr
BM3
Audioshare
I’ve had my eye on this one for a while. Does it have access to files or AudioShare for easy importing of IRs?
