Experimental App for a friend

A friend from work keeps talking about getting into iOS music, but he never finds the time to look into a purchase apps. I decided I would gift him a few apps to get him started. I think I am going to go with:

  • Koala
  • Fractal Bits
  • SpaceCraft

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good noise synth app like Bastl SoftPop, Hikari Monos, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Very kind of you but I would probably started them off with Gadget. Dead easy to get started with and you can go fairly deep into experimental/noise territory should you so wish.

As a noob if I saw Fractal Bits UI I would go back to sleep. That thing is fugly.

Is he new to producing music?

I think Figure is a good app to get people started and it’s free.

  • SAMPLR!!! and it’s on sale right now

  • if he has the patience to learn and really explore something, and also has experience with music, mirack is a fun app to experiment with. dean from electronicsounds made a bunch of videos for it and it taught me a lot about how to use it.
kinda a shot in the dark though because it’s also really intimidating for some.

  • The top two beginner apps always seem to be Samplr and Borderlands.
    For noise:
    rrarrow
    Noise maschine
    noisemusick
    Dr-Om
    Toplap app
    Hexaglyphics
    Zx plectrum
    RISCy
Not sure if they are all still available.
Phono paper and all of Alexander Zolotovs apps are really good.
    Hope that helps.

    Hi All,
    Awesome suggestions, thank you.
Sorry, I didn’t mention that he is on an iPhone and he specifically mentioned that he didn’t want anything too deep (nothing DAW like) so that rules out Samplr, Borderlands, etc. He really likes messing around with my Bastl BitRanger and Softpop so that is why I thought apps that were a mix of quick easy sound discovery (Fractal) and ease of use/fun (Koala) would be good fits.

    Would love more suggestions.

  • You should put Endlesss in that list so you can jam together.

  • Some of my suggestions should work on iphone if not all.
Most of them are also not too deep. Definitely

Thanks, will look into that. I thought I read it was subscription based? Was think office jams with Ableton link might do the trick, but will checkmoit Endlesss as well.

  • is he musician ? does he music on desktop ?

I would suggest first answer those 2 question and only then decide which app will best for him as "introductory drug"

  • What other gear / software he uses ?
I mean if he just wants to use the ipad as standalone,it would be easier to make music with Gadget, Caustic (still works!), Groovebox ... even iMpc pro 2 (it was updated recently, maybe it works now)
If he likes modular , Drambo , miRack ...

  • Shockwave
    Tardigrain
    Shapesynth

    This. It's free to try.

He has no real experience using music apps on his phone or computer, but is a fan of music and has some understanding of music from years of playing double bass.

Tardigrain is another interesting one, thanks.

  • MiRack
    Drambo
    Groovebox

  • PURE ACID

I think your first three were perfect OP. They are immediate, playable and invite discovery. SampleWiz can get pretty out there too, depending on what you sample into it. Really a fun app to play, and something I’d definitely recommend a beginner.

    Rules out

    Drambo
    Mirack

You don’t give a modular to a beginner.

  • Caustic

  • Blocs and Launchpad are really easy, fun, and free.

I think the first 2 apps that got me hooked were NodeBeat and Oscilab. That was on a Android phone, too. 😆

Figure and iKaossilator are good for first apps.
ThumbJam and DrumJam can also be really fun for beginners.
Fugue Machine and Patterning (for iPhone) are simple enough, but amazing to use as a noob.

If he likes the Bastl instruments you should consider Brambos' Ripplemaker as it's a similar, small, semi-modular, noise-making experience (it's essentially a MakeNoise 0 Coast)

  • Set him up with the Novation apps. Groovebox is probably most fitting. Instant gratification, easy to use on an iPhone and the basic parts are free.

When I started making music I came across videos of the SoftPop and was really intrigued. Haven’t found a synth on iOS that sounds comparable and I lack the skills to recreate it with modular (and the money for the hardware 😏). Does anyone know if/how something like that could be made with Drambo? I‘m looking for the bubbly, liquid-like sounds in particular.

Sorry, I did’t see your post last night (maybe came in while I was replying), but that is a great list. Thanks.

  • TC-11 or TC-Performer may be a good choice.

  • @DYMS no worries

  • Ah, if he likes noisy toys then DROM and Noisemusik are simple and fun.
For something a bit more experimental, that kinda new one Mazetools Mutant is noisy and weird.
