Seriously, I want to kill apple for making me waste money solving a problem that should not be a problem. Greedy bstrds.

I don’t see it that way. After all, you can use any old USB-C hub. How does Apple make anything from that? At least we no longer need the Camera Connection Kit just to plug in usb devices.

I didn't read your part about modding it. Is it possible to switch easily between modded and not?can u disable it quickly and easily when u want to use headphones. For me I largely use headphones, rarely audio interface, but want the ability to do both.

No, you have to open it up and cut connections on the circuit board. Or in my case, crush a component with needle-nosed pliers  If you do want to use an audio interface, just plug it in last, and iOS will choose it.

@mistercharlie I mean it's greed that made them remove the headphone jack to force ppl to buy airpods etc. That's certainly the way many people see it. Perhaps a topic for a different thread though, and one that has been discussed ad nauseum here I'm sure 😂.

    Thnx for the info.

Im lookin into that china magnetic modular cable thing they sell all over for charging ..If data AND power , it would be good for saving the only port we got on our pros...just keep that lil magnetic conn permanently plugged in..
EDIT the ones ive found sofar are only for charging :/

    @echoopera uses the Kingston Nucleum
I have been looking at this one also HYPERDRIVE 6 in 1

I use the Nucleum too (2018 ipad pro) and it has worked flawlessly.

It's always disappointing to me that the ipad is such a sleek device, but it has to have this dongle hanging off the side of it, but I manage. It hasn't fallen out yet in use. There are some hubs that attach to the side of the ipad, which I would prefer all else equal. But last I checked those models had audio/phones outputs built in and I was concerned about that causing conflicts with an audio interface attached as well.

Another vote for the Kingston Nucleum. Amazon has USB-C extension cables in various lengths so you could place the body of the hub behind the iPad or under it if it’s on a stand.

  • Not a fan of having a heavy unsightly wart on the side of my iPad while in the Magic Keyboard. Recommend getting a normal usb-c hub with a bit of an extender cable.

  • I'm about to get the Nucleum and was wondering if I can use the USB port for my K-Board Pro 4 and the USB-C for my headphones to monitor without noticeable lag?

Yeah that should work provided the KBoard plugs in to standard USB and doesn’t support AudioRouting.

The Nucleums USB-C port acts as the headphone jack for the USB-C iPad versions.

I like adding the Belkin AudioBus Splitter to my setup at times if i want to a monitor to headphones before playing on speaker:

As far as extension cables, i have this one and it works great with my MacBook Pro and iPad USB-C:

  • very good in depth videos about some hubs:

Does it take mic input through both the USB c and headphone jack inputs? @echoopera

It does in fact take Mic input from the headphones. You can even control the volume of the iPad via the headphone Volume control. I tested it with my Bose headphones and was able to use the Mic on the headphones to feed the Mic in AUM.

The USB-C to Audio Converter plugged in to the Nucleum essentially gives you the missing headphone jack on the iPad Pro USB-C Models.

    Hope that helps.

The Nucleum has been a great addition to the setup I have. Has worked great with the DigiTone and USB over Audio and my Zoom H6 and all my other gear. It's very well constructed as well. I just toss it in my Bag when I go places and it has been a champ.

  • The Nucleum is also one of the only hubs that works with the OP-Z, if you have one-off those.

Thanks! Just a pity, for those of us using an iPad Pro with a keyboard, that you have this dangling cable. Seems like it wouldn't last long and some kind of extension cable would be the only solution.

  • I've pretty much narrowed my choices down to these 2:

    HooToo:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K7C53K2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3U8F8RAEYFRNF&psc=1

    Nucleum:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076BGJXTG/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Mainly considering the HooToo provides everything the Nucleum does (except for the USB ports are 3.0 instead of 3.1)
at less than half the price

Would love to hear back if anyone has had experience using the HooToo.

My main needs are playing MIDI keyboard on my iPad Pro 2018 while monitoring directly off the iPad with headphones plugged into the hub. And down the road possibly needing to transfer video files to my iPad.

    Thanks for any advice...

  • @gkillmaster I didn't study the page thoroughly, but it looks like the hootoo is missing a headphone jack

Yes, I was hoping I could use the USB-C port for that. Just like on the Nucleum.

Does anyone else have issues with the Nucleum stopping charging randomly on an iPad pro (mine is 2018)? This on its own wouldn't bother me, but it also causes my audio interface to drop out randomly. Once it does it once it does it a lot. I've tried different chargers and cables, including official ones.

Another cheap hub of mine also does it, made by QGeeM. Doesn't happen when the iPad is plugged directly into power.

P.S. Buying an official (30w) apple power brick solved it 99%, even though the power I was using worked great on my 2017 Pro. Still gets flaky when left on for long periods though.

  • I would suggest you to go for hyperdrive USB C hub. Check review here -https://www.thecrazybuyers.com/best-usb-c-hub-for-ipad-pro/
