So between this ($8.99) and Neo Soul Keys (on sale for $12.99), what do you think?

Or the original NSK on sale for $9.99 which is still an amazing app.
NSK provides far and away the most authentic Rhodes (and Wurli and Yamaha CP) on iOS. Seriously realistic and endless tweakabillty.
The demos I’ve listened to of the apesoft app don’t, to me at least, sound as authentic. But I’m very fussy with Rhodes sounds.

Which NSK preset or setup do you find the most authentic Rhodes?

  • If u buy all the iaps for NSKs how much does it come to? Curious if they are on sale too atm also.

I used to own a Mk1 Stage 73 and still remember how it felt and sounded (including mechanical noises) very well, so I used that as a reference to create my own preset.
Although I used the suitcase rather than stage as the base model for the preset as it has slightly more balls than the stage.
I just then tweaked the various amounts of ‘tine’ (how close the times are to the pickups) and ‘bark’ (how close the hammers are to the tines) along with the key up/down noises, pedal on/off noises, velocity response etc to taste.
I’ll see if I can share it - not sure if that’s possible though??

AFAIK there aren't any IAPs in NS Studio 2, you just buy the app and everything comes with it - although you might have to download some of the presets though.

Electric Vintage is one really nice piano with lots of cool effects, NSK has several pianos and also comes with a ton of effects (it essentially has iFX Rack built-in). Both apps are worth having IMO.

I like the Electric Vintage piano because it's quite dark and gritty. The NSK samples have a bit more sunshine in them.

  • Their site mentions iaps (for nsk2) , though I'm not near my iPad to check

    https://neosoulkeys.com/

Does sound worth having though, I agree

I can't see any IAPs inside the app. I might be missing them, but in all the other Gospel Musician apps the IAPs are in the preset menu, and in NSK there doesn't seem to be any.

  • Nice! I just got to check the app store finally, yes, don't see iaps mentioned there. Weird their site says there are...

Looks like a good deal then for sure at the current price. Of course, the fact that Jamal plays so beautifully really helps to sell it in their demo vid!

There are three Neo-Soul Keys versions.

The first and the third have IAP's.

Neo-Soul Keys is IAA only and works on iPhone

Neo-Soul Keys Studio is Auv3 and standalone

Neo-Soul Keys Studio 2 is Auv3, stand-alone and also works on iPhone.

  • Dang it Random Number Generator, you’ve bested me yet again

    Yup.

@royor - the jammy bugger strikes again! - won the Atmosphere Cloud reverb code for guessing correctly that the chords played at the start were from Blue in Green (Bill Evans/Miles Davis). Maybe he will share here the very impressive app-head methods he used to find out, haha.

Don't worry though, still have 3 codes to give away for Electric Vintage, winners to be announced 2 days after vid release.

@Gavinski @Blue_Mangoo Thank you for the code for Atmosphere Cloud Reverb.. love the sound..
I swear.. total fluke.. but in case anyone wants to know..

    • opened Tonality and plugged in the 1st 2 chords that were played.. made note of the descending bass line for the others..
    • opened iReal Pro.. opened Real Book 1 + started browsing in alphabetical order.. luckily it was close to the beginning.. double checked the first 4 bars.. seemed pretty close..
    • hastily wrote in the title, thinking there would be a ton of competition.. (I know there are quite a few Jazz heads here).. + voilà..
  • I thought this technique was just brilliant haha. Well deserved. Next time in definitely picking something beginning with Z though 😜

  • I did mention in my Piano Motifs video how useful Tonality could be, but I'll admit I'd never imagined it being used like this 😏

  • Like the sound of Electric a lot.
One thing I didn’t get managed:
Parameter-modulation via internal LFO is good. On the modulation page of each parameter there is also the MIDI-sign - I suppose to modulate the parameter via CC11, but the MIDI-icon seems to be inactive... (I thought, I was able to do this in Ape Mood, but the same behavior there...)

  • I just got this app, and while the tones are certainly interesting, I find that even with the adsr set to its fastest attack, it’s always quite “soft” at the front. Is this a fixed feature, or is there something I can do to get a quicker attack? For now I’m still using Vtines for all my epiano tracks, but I keep looking for alternatives.

Have you tried AudioKit’s House: Mark I?

The only thing with House Mk I is that it has very limited velocity layers from what I remember, and it slips very quickly from pretty clean to pretty distorted

I love that about it! That’s the quirkiness that makes it feel realistic (to me anyway)

I forget where I read it, but someone once said that the real House Mark I EP did the same thing.

It’s amazing how quickly you can change the character of an EP with distortion, even before the distortion becomes that audible.

Yes, of that particular model! Which was in god knows what state of repair! I don't know enough about Rhodes pianos to comment on how typical that behaviour is. I love the tone of the house Mk I at lower velocities but find vtines a bit more versatile. If you dig that tho, great!
