(OT) Fun practice idea: jamming/soloing along with YT Synthwave songs

edited July 2020 in Other

Just stumbled across this recently, in the quest for “synth lead jamming” opportunities...

“Synthwave” (or Retrowave or Tech Noir or whatever... ) is a cool 80s synth-based music, of course. Very generally, most of it is somewhat basic and uncomplicated (in a good way). So it seems to be wonderfully useful as a backing track for practicing soloing, either with guitar, synth, or other keys. Or even a flute, lol.

The songs are very atmospheric and pleasantly moody, and have a nice driving beat. Occasionally, a song will have a short solo or two. Then you can try some counterpoint melodies or rhythm guitar maybe. But mostly it’s wide open for experimentation!

Also, I’ve found it to be a good practice for quickly determining what “key scale” the song is in. By pressing the black keys and hearing if any of those notes seem to “fit into” the song...

For example... here is a YT channel with hundreds of Synthwave type videos:

(Of course, these are copyrighted songs, so this idea is for practice only. And please... no wagering.😄 little David Letterman reference.)

Thanks! Been doing this practice less than a week, and already noticing some improvement in soloing technique. Plus, I’ve lost 5 pounds! 😂 Helps to have a top quality “backing track” (so to speak) like these songs.

Yes, it’s a sweet and extensive playlist, for sure. Gotta try listening to it while driving at night in my Ford... er, i mean my Ferarri, lol.
