Going indie: I’ve started a website about tech, ethics, and the world

Some of you may know I used to write for Cult of Mac and Wired.com, among others, and that I got laid off at the start of this corona nightmare.

In order to (hopefully) never get fired again, I’ve started out on my own. This week I launched my new site, Straight No Filter. It’s about tech, science and the like, but the twist is that it’s skewed towards ethical and environmental issues.

Check it, let me know what you think, and if you like it, please share it! If I can make it grow, I might even be able to make a living :)

  • Good luck! I’ll have a look at the first opportunity 👍

  • I like it...and I've already learnt something I didn't know! Good job!

    Liked so much.

Wish you the best. Living of writing was one of my biggest dream. Immediately shared on my social.

  • Interesting articles. Good luck on your new adventure.
P.S. The website didn’t format correctly on my 4” iPhone SE (I’m an outlier I know). The title words “straight no“ were cut in half at the top. Ignore this if it was a design choice.

    Or a lifestyle choice. ;)

Great stuff, @mistercharlie. Good luck with it!

Setting line-height: 1; (instead of 54px) on#mobile-logo makes it wrap a little nicer at 320px. Seems to work as expected on larger sizes as well.

  • Looks cool. Have bookmarked and added a couple of stories to my reading list.

    Good luck :-)

  • Thanks for the support and kind words, everyone!

It’s not. I only tested on my own phone, which is bigger.
@syrupcore i will do that right now!

It should be fixed now. I reduced the font size from 20 to 18, so now it doesn’t wrap. Let me know if it looks good on your phone.

  • Awesome. Good luck 👍

    @mistercharlie Looks good!

  • Great site with fantastic articles. Very professional. Best of luck to you.

  • Looks great, well done!

  • I'm curious to follow your path to income. I see a place holder for memberships but
I expect you'll probably use ads for revenue. The presentation is beautifully done.

I like the article on the AirPod Pro for navigation. I might be able to use that to get some.
I wish we lived in a world with realtime wireless earpieces.

I'm wonder if those wireless guitar transmitters could be used for some other musical
    "cable replacement" scenarios?

  • I like what you’ve written in the past. I have your site bookmarked. How are you planning on monetizing this? Ads would be ok. Look at toucharcade.com for how many ads are acceptable (ymmv (everyone) but if it keeps touch arcade free then I support it. I will acknowledge there is a ridiculous amount of ads on there now. I don’t care I still visit)

  • And best of luck man!!!

  • This looks great, Charlie. Good luck!

  • I think you should create a mirror site called Mister Charlie's World!

Just has a nice ring to it!

Until that point in time, I'm really enjoying your current offering!

Keep up the great work! 🤗

  • Oh yeah, thanks so much for the Ulysses tip! It will be of great use on my own sites as well!

I'm sadly in the same boat as you when it comes to editing my own offerings...

  • Nice articles.

    Bookmarked.

  • Didn't know about your association with Cult of Mac and Wired.com previously, sorry about the layoff, man. I always respect those who are courageous enough to go indie. Best of luck with your endeavor!

  • Sorry to hear about the layoff, mate
But I wish you great success in this new phase. Reading some stuff... interesting
And following you on twitter too
    Cheers!

That’s the hard part! I will have ads, once I’ve gotten things settled enough, and built up a big enough readership to make it work. Membership will be for extras, not for the main site, and I’m still thinking of how that will work.

I’ve been writing online for years, but I’ve never touched the advertising side of things, so that will be another new thing to learn. The added challenge is that I refuse to put up any ads with trackers in them, which will probably limit my market.

Anyhow, back to work. Between the new site, and the new Drambo update, I have a busy day!

  • Some excellent reading there Charlie, funny thing is, my old studio used to be opposite straight no chaser, we used to do the odd bit of visual stuff for them, great magazine :)

  • Really good stuff and I like the angle of responsibility - much needed in the world!

A slight typo: in the précis of the article on ARM Macs you say ‘silicone’ but I think you mean ‘silicon’. Not quite the same thing...

I went through that post three times stripping out the “silicone” mentions. Damn!
