UREI 964 click as AUv3?
Hi, all!
Nerdy-question alert…
Does anyone know of an Audio Unit that can emulate the classic UREI 964 click? (See here.) I know some desktop DAWs use these sounds for their built-in metronome, but I can't seem to find anything on iPadOS that emulates it.
Things I already discovered in my research:
- John Nastos' Metronomics
- A UREI click sample
- StaffPad
Metronomics has a UREI sample that can be set as part of a pattern, but the AUv3 implementation of the app remains incomplete. The settings are not published and therefore can't be saved by the host! (Yes, I let the developer know months ago.)
Using a sample is my next course of action, as I have AudioLayer and DigiStix. I know it's not difficult to do this, but I'd prefer an AUv3 that's synthesizing the sound if possible.
StaffPad's metronome uses the UREI sounds for its metronome. I could sample these, I suppose, but I'd just like to throw money at an AUv3 that already can produce the sound.
Do any of the drum machines have this sound as their metronome? Has anyone already made a preset that sounds exactly like this (say, in Ruismaker, etc.)?
Comments
Why use an AU? Just make a bar long clip with the sample and loop it.
PS, Garageband has a "click" option in the metronome settings, sounds almost identical.
Thanks, I'll check that out…
My workflow is that modular Audiobus + AUM + Xequence thing that some people are using. It works pretty well for me in live performance, but it's all MIDI and AU. I don't use any audio files or IAA apps. Plus, I'm often in odd time signatures (7/8, 9/8, etc.) where I use a custom clip in Xequence for the "click." I like to put in subdivisions and accents, meaning that it's a bit more dynamic than a loop could serve.
Right now, those custom "click" clips are driving Ruismaker Noir. I just can't get Noir to sound like the UREI metronome.
I'd still just make audio clips for AUM file player and customize them as needed. It doesn't care if it's 7/8 or 777/8
Just tried doing 7/8 with accents like:
1 2 3 1 2 1 2
True, that would work for projects that stick to a single time signature. When I first started, that would have been enough. These days, I don't always have a static pattern for my click. I've worked recently on a piece that changes from 4/4 to 7/8 to 9/8 several times depending on the section. That is one reason I need a timeline. Since I'm already sequencing instruments in Xequence, it just makes sense to keep the click patterns there. If I ever shift to a more traditional DAW, I'll take the click patterns along with everything else.
For now, I'm happy sequencing the click track per song. I'm simply looking to replace my current sounds with UREI clicks. The people who made that machine knew what they were doing. To my ears, it's a much less intrusive sound, yet still easy to distinguish. It doesn't bleed through headphones easily. As far as I've read, it's still the standard used on Hollywood scoring stages.
