Sampling from You Tube....differences in audio quality.

Hi,
I guess this has been answered before.
Why are some tracks clear and others sound like recorded underwater....
I know there are threads on sample fodder...but how can I get the best from You Tube?
I presume it’s the way the audio is processed when uploading and the way the audio was originally produced?

I am using a U-24 Zoom interface...recording I pad into MacBook in input 1.
Hi-Z button is not pushed down...

Which begs me to ask....are both inputs 1 and 2 the same on the Zoom?

Thanks...

  • Make sure you use choose at least 720p for the video to get decent audio quality.
Lower resolutions video use very low bit-rate audio...

Best quality can be had by downloading the video using any of the on-line services.

I prefer this one since it doesn't have any pop-ups or intrusive advertisement and also works fine on iOS/iPadOS :)

(It can download from many different source-sites which is always a bonus).

  • YouTube is a wild west of audio quality.

It mostly depends on the source material. garbage in / garbage out.

Then after that whichever codec YT uses when transcoding content (which has probably changed numerous times over the years).

Golden rule: if it sounds good enough to your ears, its probably good enough.

As @tk32 has already mentioned. Even if the nominal resolution is high the source material might not be. Some will have originally come from mp3s, audio tape, radio, VHS, algos used by YouTube in the past, you name it. Just listen to it on decent enough speakers/cans and judge for yourself. Also have realistic expectations when it comes to post processing especially when it comes to pitching down. If some audio information is not there it is close to impossible to bring it back.

  • Thanks everyone...all very good and valid points...

@IOSSOS i would not worry too much because Lo Fi is dominating the sampling realm . Dirty gritty beats.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Thanks....yes I know it...heard it’s a bit unreliable though?

I can screen record also...and also send to AudioStretch...

Supposedly, adding "&fmt=18" to the YT URL will push it to deliver uncompressed audio (if it exists).

I used the previous version of this app on my laptop for directly converting youtube videos to audio files. You can set the desired quality as well. I was absolutely satisfied with the result.

Ok, it’s not free. And not cheap...
    But at least professional.
