Weirder, Wilder, Ambient, Effects For Guitar?
I've been thinking of getting some of the weirder, wilder, ambient boutique effects by EarthQuaker Devices, Red Panda, Walrus Audio, Catalinbread, etc. but then I realized my two iPads are full of some of the weirder, wilder, ambient effects apps, plus all the usual iOS apps such as loopers, DAW's, guitar amp/effect modeling, etc.
I do have lots of hardware and I could put an iPad in the effects loop of my Line 6 Helix Floor for example as that might give me the best of both worlds.
Here's some of the hardware I have that might be interesting: TC Helicon VoiceLive 3 Extreme, Roland VG-99, Roland GR-55, Fishman TriplePlay, Kemper Profiling Amp, Line 6 Helix Floor, Korg Kronos X, Boss RC505, Boss DD-500, Boss RV-500, Boss SY-1000, Electro Harmonix SuperEgo+, Electro-Harmonix MEL9, Electro-Harmonix B9, Digitech Whammy 5, Digitech TRIO Plus, DigiTech SDRUM, Digitech Time Bender, Digitech Freqout, Fernandez Sustainiac guitars, Heet EBow, etc.
Have you guys has much success using an iPad as a guitar effects processor to get some of the weirder, wilder, ambient effects? I also have a few foot controllers such a Behringer FCB1010, Keith McMillen Softstep 2, as well as tabletop controllers such as Novation Launchpad Mini.
I do like the sturdy, hardware-based, form factor of guitar pedals, but it would be messy and expensive to build a pedalboard and go that route. Any suggestions on how you've setup your iPad and controllers and apps to emulate (or go beyond) some of the weirder, wilder, ambient boutique effects pedals would be most welcome!
Comments
You can run pedals in front of your ipad interface, have done that with gain and wah effects, as i think the hardware versions of these are less well copied in iOS.
You could reamp out of the audio interface using something like the pigtronix switchmaster, into your amazing collection of pedals!) haven’t tried that method as yet, (out of laziness, as its so easy to play with combinations within AUM)
Its great to run into several channels of AUM with different effects chains, and also effects sends to delays, reverbs, etc, and also use MIDI guitar app to control synths, or the dry signal with Roxsyn. Ebow and Fernandes sustainer play very well with this kind of set up. I like to use scatterbrain and perforator apps as a slicer/ pseudosequencer, effectrix, all the eventides for ambient washes.
I haven’t got an ideal app to imitate the red panda grain delay as yet
There was a nice ambient guitar AUM preset shared on this site april 2019, that used envelopes and delays
Would love to hear other’s ideas and suggestions
Thanks Tickletiger,
I already have a dedicated effects switcher, I cannot recall the brand, but I would expect it to be the equivalent of the Pigtronix Switchmaster, but Google shows no such animal exists. I also have a Line 6 Helix Floor which can act as an effects switcher, as it has a few effects loop I/O's on ¼ inch.
I'm thinking of putting an iPad in the effects loop of my Line 6 Helix Floor, as that might give me the best of both worlds.
There’s not much the iPad can’t do fx wise. Sell all your pedals.
Can you name drop me a couple of weird FX on IOS? I'm willing to buy a couple of them just to have fun. Thanks
I use iPad for FX. I'm still reluctant to gig with an iPad except as a notation viewer, but the iPad is excellent in the studio:
BLEASS and Eventide reverbs, Classic FX, Saturn2, FieldScaper
And if only FLUX by belew received an update...
k7D- DLYM-TTAP-Turnado-effectrix-Eventide Crystals, microPitch and Qvox can all get pretty out there.
Also going through MiRack or drambo gets crazy very quick.
Or, Midi guitar 2 through any number of synths and effects
And don't forget the various Woodman's apps. Woodulator or Woodscaper are both designed with guitarists in mind, but certainly not limited to guitar. Classic FX is also a good one, especially since the latest update. Also Stratosphere Cloud Reverb. And.... basically everything! I mean, if you want weird... Any apeSoft or Amazing Noises apps are pretty mind blowing.
Obliged, The Pup
There are a few YouTube videos on running pedals with the iPad, however there is a plethora of great FX in the App Store. Go on Audiobus Compatible Apps page and filter only audio/effects to see a very long list. that List doesn’t even have every thing either so... yea. Lots of great stuff out there, not only as an individual app, but also all the Host/DAW internal effects, plus Amp & FX Sim apps with countless pedals and racks available inside, and then the multi-fx apps too. Typing this I’m actually realizing how many dang effect options there really are... wow.
Edit: just realized something else... this doesn’t really answer your question. Lol.
Anyone that wants to be holding a guitar (and using it as "the" single controller) while an IOS device makes wild, weird sounds needs to buy MIDI Guitar 2 and all it's IAP's. It will allow FX to be applied to the guitar input and turn "notes" into MIDI events at the same time. It is an AUv3 Host for FX apps and synths.
Someone watching the performance will assume the sounds are coming anywhere but from the guitarist.
It's an out of body experience for the guitarist... doors open to rooms never accessible before.
So you have an example for weirder wilder ambient?
TTAP and Looperator and GlitchCore comes to mind. You can make a little chase bloss mood pedal with the freeze feature in GlitchCore as seen here
You want some really out there effects? Try MiRack.
Nice! @david_2017
And don't forget ttap as a microlooper. It's amazing for that.
if you say weirder wilder ambient again i swear !!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Flux:FX is best run standalone. The good news is it will run on even an iPad 2 just fine and I have no trouble using it live into a JC120.
Turnado
You could sync midi via a midi interface and go wild with an expression pedal. I can see FCB1010 being perfect as a controller for this set up.
👍
I use lots of parallel and series effects routing patched together in AUM. In addition to Blackhole, Mangleverb etc, I love using long user made impulse responses in Thakfnar, layered with glitches, burbles and random, microloops from FluxFX, iPulsaret, Ttap, WOV and FAC Envolver modulating DLY times. Then hints of physical modelling using apps like Objeq, CuSnP, the Rings clone in MiRack. I also use a couple of different vocoders as resonators sometimes; lock a note, bass or otherwise to the key you're playing in and use the guitar as a modulator; the vocoder note usually set quite low in the mix, then only resonates when you return to the key centre. I'm working on an AUM patch at the moment using 6 instances of Thakfnar, all using different impulse responses. 😉
Thanks for the heads up on Glitchcore, @david_2017 , found this setup works well for me
As a word of caution. I’ve bought MiRack about a week ago and found UI atrocious, at least on Pro 10.5. Even simplest patches are glitchy graphics wise. Moving modules around required a lot of ‘getting used to’. This is even before getting into the complexity of the app.
I got mine refunded and didn’t even feel compelled to keep it on my device.
I will concede that the UI is a little rough and it takes a bit of getting used to in terms of how to wire modules up. But I really didn't have any trouble wiring up simple resonator effects, etc. Glad you mention it here, though, as I don't want to steer anyone toward a purchase that could be a regret. Some of the Mutable Instrument modules are mind-bending FX, though.
Some very creative ideas there.. I’ll be experimenting with a few of them in my next guitar session.. thank you..
You've still gotta get a Walrus Audio Julia chorus. The best chorus for guitar I've ever used. Most of their other effects range from "eh it does the job" to "pretty good", but that one is special.
Thank you everyone, there are some great ideas here!
I think I'll use my Line 6 Helix Floor and put my iPad Pro in one of the stereo effects loops. That allows lots of functionality and leaves another pair of effects loops if I wanted to add a weirder wilder ambient pedal or two.
The Helix would also free up the iPad Pro from any basic duties such as amp modeling, more conventional time and pitch based effects, etc. so I'd not likely run up against any iPad Pro CPU limitations. I could control the iPod Pro via the onboard MIDI of the Line 6 Helix Floor or externally via the FCB1010 or Keith McMillen Softstep 2.
I have a second iPad (iPad Air 2 128) that I could put in the Line 6 Helix Floor's second set of stereo effects loops and thus have two iPads running in two stereo effects loops on my Line 6 Helix Floor, but being able to sync everything might be iffy.
I have a few questions:
Has anyone tried to use the Helix Floor as both a MIDI controller for an iPad Pro as well as a MIDI master clock and thus would have a template for this?
Has anyone tried to use the FCB1010 or Keith McMillen Softstep 2 as a controller for an iPad Pro for and thus would have a template for either of these controllers?
A while back on this thread I asked the following but it must have got lost in the weirder wilder ambient dust: I have all of these (except FLUX by belew). What is the usability status of these four on an iPad Pro running iOS 13.06?
Flux-FX by Adrian Belew
FLUX by belew
fluXpad
FLUX-FX play
Yours Truly,
The Weirder Wilder Ambient Pup
Edit: I can connect the iPad Pro to the Helix via USB and get audio I/O, and Midi CC. Also I can program the Helix switches to control the iPad Pro. At the least this means I do not have to use any of the Helix effects loops nor bother with an audio interface for the iPad Pro.
I was going to make a thread asking how to use a synth like AudioKit with my guitar and here you went and provided me with a means to do so.
WTF is Thakfnar?
The app formerly know as ______ I honestly dont know - a weird acronym thing
(something like roomsverb? Roomsreverb? An older IR loading Verberation plug
)
@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr THe App Formerly KNown As Rooms. It’s currently the only universal AUv3 IR loader that does true stereo. It’s free with the auv3 a 2.99 IAP. Totally worth it for guitar to get different IR cabs in there. Even more interesting when you load in a .wav snippet of any audio into the IR loader. Talk about weirder and wilder.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/thafknar-record-and-reverb/id572894725
Old Thak also has very decent IR file management built in. You can move or copy impulse responses into your own sets and zip them up, all within the app. You have to do the file management stuff in either the standalone or the IAA first. Low mixed light water trickles, with a bit of high-pass filtering sound great when used as IRs; use them full wet for ambient goodness, along with a separate channel for any dry signal content. Also vocalised whispers can be lots of fun.
Many thanks, my distinguished colleagues. I even have that app, but didn't know it had been renamed. A google search strangely did not enlighten.
