  • Haha, that was quick. A man of action!

  • I have an iPod Touch and use it for music. ;)

  • Cheers @telecharge, good catch. Updated the question intro.

  • It would seem obvious that anyone into music apps would prefer an iPad (for size of interface). But consider that in addition to the portability (always carry it on me) factor, many people married to Apple products update their phone every 1 or 2 years, while the iPad is $400+ (unsubsidized) and can have a longer life span.

Point being, my iPhone 5s has notably more processing power than my iPad2. So far, I'm able to do equal things on both, though apps like BIAS struggle at times on the older iPad. I also stay away from larger file DAW's like Cubasis and Auria, and am a little reluctant to try something like Thor Synthesizer, though I'm sure all of them would work to varying degrees.

  • I don't own an iPhone but I am thinking of buying an iPod Touch to augment my iPad workflow. Would be nice for extreme portability for recording ideas. Still, more of a want than a need....

I have a iPad 4 and iPhone 5s, and use both for music. Weird now because the little guy is noticeably better sounding and running...and as mentioned above, it forces some reflection on tools and has made me jones for certain synths on the phone- like an AB- (or IAA, is that treasonous?) capable Animoog. Not to mention 20 other instruments and fx I've been spoiled by on iPad. Not that anyone should give a shit what I do, but I can share that I'm playing w/ Apollo midi, to connect Lemur on iPad to the DAWs and many beautiful instruments in iPhone.

  • I was just going to start a thread related to this. Just got an iPhone 5s, and it has way more horsepower than my ipad2- I'm bummed that so many apps are iPad only.
I realize that some would be too frustrating on a small screen, just wish I could take more advantage of the extra horsepower.

I had an iPod touch 5 and I sold it for food.

  • Some of the gyro stuff is just more fun to use with an iPhone so sometimes I'm controlling apps on my iPad with Thumblam or Soundprism on my iPhone using Apollo MIDI over Bleuetooth.

    That's good stuff. Essential.

  • I use an iPad Mini and an iPhone 5s. I kinda like how restrictive the iPhone is in terms of the # of apps available. I've learned to appreciate the universal apps such as MTDaw, Loopy, and the AUFX stuff. But I feel that little bit of restriction really makes me focus on the sound and arrangement of my mix. I would like to see more developers embrace the smaller devices.

  • Also using both, iPad and iPhone and so I pretty much like those few universal-apps around (BTW: and any afford devs are making keeping them synced..)
And the iPhone is at least a very capable expander, I think.
What I very much don't like is seeing fabulous iPad apps crippled or abandoned on the iPhone for no reason I can think of.

  • I try not so shill too much -- but I saw Apollo pop up a couple times here. It's on sale for a buck at them moment, so if you've got multiple BLE-capable devices, this would be a good time to grab it. NTBYF has an Apollo "A" endpoint built in, and it's free right now. I'm planning on adding Apollo support to my other apps, and might roll it out as a library for other developers to use.

As Apple cranks out more devices, I'm expecting pretty much everyone to have a couple of iSomethings -- my hope is that easy-to-use MIDI will keep more of the old devices in the game.

  • Rolling out as a library would be great!

The apt tool of the survey above might get this slant on mobile music making noticed

But what if I might want to add a €150,- iPod Touch as 3rd iDevice?
How will I keep them all beeing synced via BLE?

The "B" Apollo endpoint will be able to link up to multiple devices. I should be able to get this finished up in the next couple of months, and then you'll be able to have a "star" pattern of connections. I'm planning on adding some clocking and routing features as well.

There will be limits to how much you can do, though -- there's a finite amount of wireless bandwidth, so it's not like Vangelis is going to be able to replace the MIDI cabling in his studio. It should work pretty well for most people, with three or four devices going at the same time.

@SecretBaseDesign: Sounds fantastic! I am enjoying the simplicity (but not the design, sorry) of Apollo since the last sale.

  • I'm quite thrilled with the iPhone 5 for creating music. It's amazing that we even have this kind of ability at our disposal! Once I learn my way around everything, it should be great fun!

    Agree wholeheartedly.
