BM3 - moving a loop area in sample editing

Hi guys,
I was wondering why I cannot move the grey area to another position.
See screenshot below...many thanks...

Whenever the sample and loop start/end markers overlap it becomes a slightly tricky touchscreen manoeuvre to separate them again. You can either blame Intua, or in my case, blame my sausage finger genetic trait.

When tapping near the marker tabs, BM3 tends to assume you are more likely to want to move the Loop start/end markers (LS and LE), and you can't move these beyond the boundaries set by the Sample start/end markers (S and E). The solution for you is to tap and drag the very top edge of the S (and very bottom edge of the E) markers and then move these boundary markers wherever you want.

Once the sample and loop markers are separate it's much less fiddly to move the S, SE, LE, and L tabs independently by touch.

My suggestion to Intua (if they are reading this) is to move the LS tab down a little, and the LE tab up a little, so that their touch hotspots are more distinct from the S and E boundary markers.

  • Thanks tk32
Thought I could touch the grey border above the ‘s’ and drag the whole looped area right or left...
But need to just drag laboriously each side,,,,,

  • Yes - there are still a few small clunky UX issues like this lingering in BM3. You stumbled across one of them :)

You can only move the markers by grabbing the tabs. It's the same with slice markers.

  • Ok...with no loop on, I can move the whole area okay....

  • That's another (even better) solution ;)

I usually persevere with the loop left switched on until my fat fingers hit the right spot

  • .. but have to exit the edit page each time to turn looping back on...
In edit page cannot turn loop on and off......

I think Intua's thinking is that you probably set start and end markers before enabling loop, at which point you are much less likely to want to move the S and E boundaries either deliberately or by mistake. This is also why the S and E tabs are slightly greyed-out (I would guess).

This is sensible logic, and avoids accidents, but does make it a pain the ass if you want to finetune the start/end markers after enabling loop mode.

Like I said, it can be done, you just have to grab the very outer edge of the boundaries markers.

  • And the issue still persists in 2020...

Early on (many years ago) I suggested to have the Start & End handles at the top of the sample view and Loop Start & End at the bottom to avoid this situation, also suggested being able to move the area by tap'n'drag on the grey area.

Other options where that sample end could snap to 'loop end' to make precise trimming easier and when moving loop-end the sample end would follow...

I know the MPC gets some bashing at the BM3 forums but I've kinda grown to like MPC Beats on the desktop...
...sure it's not perfect but it doesn't 'get in the way' and looping is pretty straight forward, set loop start and it will loop to the sample end, no separate loop start & end handles, just one handle unless the whole start & end portion is looped.

We'll have to see what the rumored BM3 update will bring but honestly my expectations are low but I love surprises so... :)
