Tonebridge is dead - what's the best alternative (AUv3 compatible)?
Hello everybody
I wanted to have different instances of Tonebridge running as AUv3, but apparently the instances are mixing their settings, which is a bug in Tonebridge.
But this bug will never be fixed, as Tonebridge is not supported anymore: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2033129
As I have no idea of creating my own guitar FX, I loved the simplicity of Tonebridge:
- That I can search for presets that are named after songs that I know
- That it is AUv3 compatible
- That I can easily switch between different presets using my iRig foot controller
So now here's my question: what other guitar FX app do you recommend that is available on iPhone, is lightweight, has AUv3 (and different instances can be run separately), has a variety of presets of different styles (acoustic, distorted, reggae, country...), can be controlled by MIDI, and does not need a paid subscription?
I have taken a look at several of them, but there are many of them, and from looking at YouTube reviews I don't seem to be able to decide.
At the moment Overloud THU looks promising to me. (Also, Deplike seems cool, but it is a paid subscription.)
Thanks a lot (and sorry for asking this question which might have been posed in a similar manner a dozen of times already)
Joshua

Thanks! But I forgot to mention that it should be available for iPhone.![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
If you’re not too fussed about having more than 2 instances you could (possibly) try running ToneStack and ToneStack go in parallel. IMO AUV3 other than being able to run many of them doesn’t really offer other noteworthy advantages at this point in time.
I’m offering this suggestion because I’m aware that other than using several different AUV3 apps stacked I don’t see a candidate at present.
For my taste Overloud THU is the best sounding guitar amp & FX suite that has AUv3 and MIDI support and many many presets
Since you can download it for free including a handful of amps and effects why not try it?
Looks pretty good! But it throws the DSP (what does it mean anyway?) in AUM from ~12% to 40% when loading a first AUv3 instance, and to 60% with a 2nd instance on my iPhone 5S. Tonebridge would need not half as much.
I will receive an iPhone SE soon, so this will have some more power. But still, I'd prefer a less CPU heavy solution.
Aye, but that's what makes it sound so good?
High-quality amp simulation is not a low-CPU operation. You will save a lot of grief by recording the effected signal and running only one sim at a time if you want quality sounds. That way you don't need multiple simultaneous instances.
Try the Mooer "GE Labs" amp sim... also free with dozens of amps. They only ask you to pay if you want to store a rig as a preset. It probably is also CPU heavy.
Blue Mangoo "Gain Stage Vintage Clean" does a few amp/tone models and might be lower on the CPU scale.
Klevgrand "Stark" might also use less CPU.
FabFilter "Saturn" includes multiple studio pre-amp types that are useful and they write highly optimized
CPU code in general.
There's a "saturator" and "EQ" in AUM that also can provide basic distortions with very little CPU cost.
Isn't it great to have choices? Free and otherwise for AUv3 uses?
Nembrini Audio
@josh83 you probably won’t believe that, but your initial message triggered a series of processes within the company that eventually led to fixing the multiple Audio Units issue. And it’s despite the fact that Tonebridge hasn’t been updated in 2 years!
We had to rework the whole code base to fix the bug, so it would make us very happy if you guys helped us with the testing.
To join the beta-testing, follow this link.
@Tonebridge That's good news, I previously enjoyed using your app when it was the only AUv3 guitar option, happy to give it another go, will sign up for beta.
@josh83 as you seem to have magical influence, expect a long list of other apps we're all going to want you to post about![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
“Process triggering” makes the world go around!. This is very nice of you. I’ve always liked Tonebridge, its extremely friendly and a great concept. Unique rush when you search for a favorite band and it’s actually there with some really cool looking pedals. Lovely and lovable app 🤘👍
Wow, what good news this is! Thank you so much, guys! I love you all.

So good to know to be able to help making a little difference here. I LOVE the Tonebridge app, and it's so beautiful to see it fixed soon.
@Tonebridge:
As far as I can tell, the AUv3 compatibility is working now. Thank you so much for that!
On the other hand, I figured out that I can only switch between presets when I don't have my phone in flight mode.
What's your reasoning on this? And could you please make available offline at least the presets that are favourites (similar to the Ultimate Guitar Tabs app)?

I’m using nembrini crunck paired up with iVCS3 spring AU. I like the overall sound of crunck but the tailed notes sound super digital. I haven’t bought any other nembrini stuff because of this. I’m not too fussed because I’d normally use an outboard guitar multieffect to save cpu but also for physical controls. For practice and quick jamming the above works fine for me and is fairly cpu friendly.
Hey @josh83, there’s no special reason for that, we just didn’t consider the use-case. We might add it in one of the next releases if there will be any.
Hi @Tonebridge , how can I select channel over the standalone app? I connect my guitar to an interface, ur22 MKII, but I can’t see that option.
As Au inside GarageBand I can change the channel in the GarageBand settings and can hear the effects but not as standalone as I said.
Thank you in advance!
This would be wonderful, thank you. It just makes sense to disable everything not related to audio production when performing live, so going to flight mode is reasonable.
I find that enabling Do Not Disturb (moon in Control Center) and disabling sounds (bell) works pretty well. Those instructions are taped to my music stand, so I can't forget.
Good to know, thank you!
Still, I might be playing some day in a spot that does not have any connectivity, and it would be a bummer to not be able to use Tonebridge under these circumstances. ![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
