  • That folder has 1800 files in it (directly not in subdirectories).

As @wim said, lots of files directly in a folder is a problem.

Fwiw. the overwhelming majority of iOS users never encounter this issue.

    OK, easiest way i know:

Download this to AudioShare : http://content.audulus.com/Audulus-Old-Forum-Patch-Collection.zip
At best, create a new directory, call it "TEST".

Tap on the file to extract the content.
This is fast and AudioShare can handle this perfectly.

Then open the Files app, enter the "TEST" folder in the AudioShare provider, and bammmmm:

Yes, i just did that myself to make sure that it still does not work.
This happens for me on all devices and versions of iOS / iPadOS and for anything that contains more that 100 or maybe 200 files.

If the link does not work, i can share a link to the zip file on my OneDrive, just ask.

FWIW - I keep the bulk of my files on Dropbox or iCloud Drive. There is no need for me to keep a lot of stuff on my iPad other than what I am currently working with. Why would I need 2500 kick drum samples on my iPad? I typically work at home with good wi-fi available. If I'm not at home my working files are on my iPad. I've stopped using any third party file managers because I just don't need them except I have iFiles available for uncompressing certain types of files and I rarely need to do that. I never have any problem with the Files app. It works fine for me with all of the apps I use, mainly Auditor and Zenbeats when it comes to samples/audio files. I'm just pointing out that there is another side to this story and that it's more likely there is another issue involved than "Files is a bad app".

I see your point, but at the same time, IMO if an app that is supposed to be for accessing and managing files on the device requires one to mostly keep things in the cloud...I’d say that’s not a very good file managing app... And as not the entire world lives in places with reliable good wi-if, it’s a bit obnoxious. I really can’t rely on storing anything I will need in the cloud with where I typically spend my time, and only really ended up diving into the iOS world (very happily) when I thought I was sure I wouldn’t need to...

    @tja What did this contribute?
You do not have many files and see no use for them, which is fine.

    :|

I am just conveying my experience with an app like everyone else here is. At no time did I indicate that Files required wi-fi. Again, just relating my experience and maybe that can help somebody.

Seems like if a post doesn't bash Apple or gush over an app then it does not "contribute" and should not ever see the light of day.

  • @tja: no one is saying it isn't a bug. It is a bug. It is also a bug encountered by a very small percentage of iOS users.

@wim Extract to what? I mostly want my stuff either in AudioShare or in some cloud storage.
Both does not work for me with the files App.

I think that question was meant for @Samu , not me.

I find quibbling over "exactly how much the files app sucks" to be highly amusing. :D

Call me back when it gets to be at least almost as good as Windows 95. B)

  • @tja - Try again later. Often the files app is still working in the background, causing such issues.

I just pointed to the fact, that when people complain about the Files App not working as expected in basic regards when using a somewhat larger amount of files (for me over 100 or 200), it does not help to say that you don't have so many files in your folders and that you therefor do not have the same problem.

It does not help and it does not contribute.

Example: If people complain about a car only reaching for 400 kilometers before needing a gas station or re-fuel, it does not contribute to say that you only ever drive 20 kilometers. It does neither help nor contribute.

OK, how’s this? I have folders with hundreds of files and I do not have any issues with the Files app! That’s a fact! And who crowned you the “Forum Police”? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just for info, I tried this file in GoodReader (which appears On My iPad) and File Explorer Pro (which appears in the Locations sidebar). The Files app was able to see the extracted files in both cases. I also copied the file to the Downloads folder and unzipped it there. Still no problem, except the iPadOS unzip is much slower than the others. iPadOS 13.6 on iPad 6.

I believe that the Files app is not a general Finder or Windows Explorer like on a computer. It relies on each app providing an interface it can use, and it accesses the files they provide. That's why the folders On My iPad are so helter-skelter. The apps support the interface, but may or may not provide any files. So these problems are most likely flaws in specific apps interfaces to Files, not the Files app itself.

The last test i did with Documents compared to AudioShare seems to imply the same.
Would be great to get some reply from @j_liljedahl

I've been away from work but trying to get back now... :)
I'll have a look and see if I can spot any weirdness going on from my side.

Ok, seems to be a memory limit (of 15 MB) that iOS/FileProvider applies, so when returning a list of a large number of items it crashes with a "you used too much RAM!". The documentation doesn't mention this anywhere. I'll try to fix it.

And... fixed! I'll try to put out an AudioShare beta tomorrow.
