Calling all Sound Designers - what does your ‘typical’ day consist of?
Hello folks, I’m curious as to what type of stuff you do in a ‘normal’ day. I know each day will differ and there is no such thing as ‘typical’ or ‘normal’, but what you do? I’m interested in any stories. Cheers. (Apologies if I have not posted this in the correct category)

Depends on what you mean by sound designer. Do you mean someone who crafts presets for a living, or do you mean producers who design their own sounds on the fly, or both? I'm the latter.
I get up in the morning, do my business, shower, and brush my teeth. Then I play videogames for an hour. After that, I cook eggs and toast for breakfast. Then it's time to get down to business producing music. Since NS2 is my raison d'être, I design my sounds in Obsidian on the fly as I continue with the production. If I'm producing Dubstep or Complextro or Bass House, all bets are off with the possibilities of what I can feed into WOOTT. Lately, my Dubstep basses are mangled samples I get off of Freesound.org.
Once I start feeling hungry, I just pop some salad mix into a bowl and have lunch. Then I head downstairs to practice piano (whether I'm learning a new song or simply running through Hanon exercises) for about 30 minutes. Then back to production. This is the part where I usually arrange a track beyond the drop. Then before you know it, it's supper time where then I usually waste my time either addicted to scrolling through Facebook, watching Youtube, or both. Then videogames, and then a late-night production sesh.
That's basically a typical day. There are some days I have breakfast with friends, supper with friends, or both on rare occasion. There are also days I perform piano at my job (Wednesdays and Saturdays).
Busy busy.
I'm only a "beginner" sound designer at this point. But the sound design parts of my day are spent, listening to the sounds of vintage synths, testing theories, and experimenting with methods of analog sound recreation.
My current "obsession" is studying sound synthesis as a breakdown of individual sound elements.... In other words I'm attempting to reverse engineer different categories of sound type, so I can use what I learn to design new sounds.
Right now I'm working on an analysis of Oberheim OB-X and OB-Xa filter characteristics.
@jwmmakerofmusic mate, that’s a great reply, sounds like a perfect day to me. I guess initially I was kinda askin about people who would write ‘sound designer’ on some kind of form they had to fill in when asked about their occupation but, now that I’ve asked, any replies are appreciated. Ever since my addiction to iOS music making began I’ve been curious about the role of the sound designer. Keep up with the salads, always good for keeping business regular.
@horsetrainer, thanks for the reply and I applaud your approach towards being able to create these sounds. To control the beast you must understand the beast. Hope your obsession is working well, I’m gonna have a listen to those synths...
Cheers.
sounds like an awesome day to me. So how does all this work translate to income. do you sell online, to sync music for placement? etc. just curious because that kind of music writin schedule sounds pretty appealing to me
Well, I was being a bit of a cheeky bugger with the above, lol. Right now, I'm working on setting up a Fiverr account and plan to offer my services there.
I created enough content this year alone to have a decent portfolio for people to listen to and decide if my services are right for them.
@jolico i like it. I hadn’t heard that tune before. Nice way to start my day of eat, sleep, check appsliced, repeat. I may also record the hum of the fridge into spacecraft if I can stop dancing.
very cool. i started a fiverr account a few months back.Iv’e had to pause it because I have been busy moving into a new house, and selling my old house . but It’s a very good service. in the short time i’ve had it , i’ve made an intro song for a podcast, and sound design for an commercial.
if i can offer a bit of advice. be very clear in your descriptions explaining how many revisions you will do. And make several tier price levels for more options for customers. they are willing to pay for them if availible
and they like your work.
Also, if you can make a nice trailer video, showing examples of your work and range in sound design, that is also a big help
good luck, hopefully you can make some nice money on there. it’s pretty fun.
Spend most of my time just kind of sitting alone in my closet, wishing I never existed. A few weeks of that, and you get some good ass inspiration for sound design and mixing
