Which Shimmer reverb?
OK, people keep asking about this, here is my current brief take on this:
Alteza: sounds great if you want huge, huge reverb. Control of 3 stages of All Pass Filters, each of which has up to 8 filters, is good for shaping your sound. Has very few presets with shorter tails, so for more versatility you’re going to have to dial things in. I would maybe prefer a dry / wet knob than having to adjust separate dry out and wet out knobs, but there could be volume trade-offs there. If Fred did it this way, he did it for a good reason, that you can guarantee.
Toneboosters Reverb: I have barely used this, just gave it a listen, it sounds fantastic. PitchShift is limited to 1 octave up or down (many others go to 2, eg. Eventide). Someone else who has used this reverb more can give a more educated opinion, I have limited time to spend on this! But I definitely want to check this one out more, as actually, it sounds great. Plus, it is a good general reverb. So - the most versatile maybe overall.
4 Pockets: has great xy pads for modulating panning and other things. If on a budget and don’t have many other fx apps, and want control over modulation in a live setting, this might be a good choice.
Bleass: has some really interesting experimental presets. Sometimes sounds a bit bright for my taste, despite fiddling with the filter. Maybe I just need to experiment more to get the sound I’m looking for, not sure. Nice to have the lfo modulation.
Eventide: probably my pick of the bunch. Has tons of presets , the factory ones are well organized into short / medium / long sub-groups. Has the ribbon, freeze etc. Sounds very smooth.
Again, there is more to say on all of these, I’ll let others fill in the gaps and agree / disagree, add others I have forgotten about. The takeaway: in a pinch, any of these will do. If you are a shimmer or reverb fanatic, they all have their own plus points.
So what do others think?

Now chain them all as one effect!
You left out TB Shimmer. Eventide looks like the best, I agree.
There is no dedicated TB shimmer app but the TB Reverb has a shimmer mode and some presets
What he said!
@samu, my error. I meant 4 pockets shimmer which may be what @Gavinski is referring to.
Haha, I think that's what Alteza already did maybe 😜
Read my post again maybe! @LinearLineman I mentioned both TB Reverb (there is no TB Shimmer) and the 4 Pockets Shimmer.
I have BLEASS shimmer. I like it, it is very bright.
Still copping eventide shimmerverb though. Looks and sounds amazing. Kind excited to compare the two and use them for different things.
Shit I’ll chain them together for some fun lol
I agree with your rankings and summaries.
Eventide is the cream of the crop as you'd expect given their Desktop
dominance and engineering talent.
Eventide is to time-based FX what FabFilter is to EQ's. The best on IOS is each category
but decently imitated at a lower price. Still, Shimmer for $10 is a steal. I grabbed it before
it gets to $18-20. But most could live with these others. The Eventide shows is pedigree
in an A/B test with excellent DSP coding.
A recent Jacob Haq video explains that Phasers, Flangers, Reverbs, Delays, Echos are all
time-base FX with various timescales for a few milli-seconds to seconds.
I also purchased all the FX in OverLoud's TH-U Amp Sim app and they have a Shimmer Reverb that
competes with well with the 2nd tier FX'es. It's purchasable for $5 but the "FULL FX" IAP cost me $22
and it's really good for a great collection of guitar Rack and Stomp FX. It also works as an AUv3 as
an FX product.
Nice analysis. Have you delved into the TB one? As I said, I have barely used this reverb, but it's more out of a case of just not having got round to it than out of any value judgement. It sounded very good but I would need to compare more carefully. Would you still give Eventide the edge in a back to back comparison?
The TB Reverb is the most versatile single reverb on iOS in my opinion and sounds really good in addition to being versatile. The Shimmer is excellent. Not to say it is better than Eventide’s. Bit it is excellent.
Yes, it definitely seems like, if you wanted to only get one reverb, the TB would probably be the one to go for. I'll definitely be exploring that one more.
These comparison games are VERY subjective and I'm sure I suffer from confirmation bias when I know
which is which.
I love the ToneBoosters Reverb "Shimmer Presets".
But in a quick A/B comparison Eventide wins.
If after taking the A/B test I made a mix with one or the other and made you guess I doubt you'd
be able to guess which one I used. So, it's a matter of the pleasure you get like any really refined tool.
There are "knock offs" the do the same job and only shows a slight lack of polish in the fast A/B
comparison. In the final work who would here that something could be a little cleaner? It's a small
difference in other words.
ToneBoosters, FAC, 4 Pockets and Bleass are all very close to the leaders but not perfect imitations
of the leaders. FabFilter, Eventide, and OverLoud. The best small shop developer for me sonically is DDMF.
I would give Eventide a slight edge for pristine DSP processing. We need more of these desktop
titans making IOS apps and at $10 it's a no brainer for me and yet I have them all. $10 is a lot of money but it will go to the standard Eventide price which I think is $18. Once that happens I wait for
sales. I think Shimmer and Blackhole are important tools to create huge pristine mixes.
We will also see great knock offs of popular desktop products from the smaller dev shops which means
we have more options at various price points.
maybe not the cheapest solution: Hire a string ensemble to accompany your instrument.
Tuba shimmer next
@McD do Overloud have any plugins on iOS other than TH-U?
I don't think so. Just TH-U for IOS so far. But the All FX IAP got me 58 FX modules.
I just noticed there's also a Shimmer Delay in addition to the Shimmer Reverb.
NOTE: The OverLoud Distortion Stompboxes are an extra $23 IAP. But the "Funk and R&B"
IAP got me the TubeScreamer, Fuzzface and Boss Overdrive stomps so for my needs I'm good.
I don't need the more metal style distortion pedals.
