Sound fx and field recording with your bare hands (and an iphone, and... what else?)

Hi, folks!
I’ve enlisted in one indie video game project as a composer. Some time ago I discovered that music can be perfectly done without pc, only on ipad. Now I’m about to cover sound effects realm (you know, sounds of chainsaw cutting through meat, blood running on the metal floor and all that stuff we love video games for). And so comes the question: sound effects and field recording - is it possible on ios (ipados, ok), and is it convenient as ipad music writing? What gear should i use?
Found some zoom lightning mics (iq7 for example) and some mini shotgun-mics for streaming/interviewing. Seems they can get me to good results with really small chain and good portability. On other hand there are tascam recorders (dr 22wl in particular), that can be operated via iphone app. And on other (oh, third hand) there’s always more classical chain: using some small audio interface (i have irig pro io) and full scale mics (for example audio technica shotguns).
The goal is to keep it all mobile and small, yet with decent audio quality.
So... any ios sound effects engineers out there?
